Why Choose AVI for ESL?
Because Generic English Classes Don’t Get You a License
Most ESL programs teach you how to talk about the weather. AVI’s program teaches you the words that actually matter — the ones on your Virginia state board exam, in your client consultations, on your job applications, and in your professional life. Here’s what makes AVI different.
1. ESL Built Around Your Beauty Career — Not Someone Else’s General Education Goals
At NOVA Community College and most ESL programs, you study English as a subject. At AVI, you study English as the key that unlocks your cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, or massage therapy license. Every lesson is grounded in real career context — the reading passages you’ll encounter on state board exams, the professional vocabulary used in licensed salons and spas, and the communication skills you need to serve a diverse American clientele with confidence.
You’re not taking a detour. You’re taking the direct road to your license.
2. A School That Understands Where You Come From
AVI Career Training was built to serve the real Northern Virginia community — one of the most diverse regions in the United States. Our staff includes multilingual team members who understand what it feels like to navigate a new country, a new language, and a new professional system at the same time. You won’t feel invisible here. You won’t feel dismissed. You’ll feel like you belong — because you do.
We train students to work beautifully on every skin tone. That’s not just a statement about technique. It’s a statement about who we believe deserves to be in this industry.
3. Small Cohorts, Personalized Mentorship
Large community colleges process hundreds of ESL students at a time. At AVI, you’re known by name. Our small cohort model means your instructor sees your progress, understands your specific challenges, and supports you through the moments when it feels hard — because it will sometimes feel hard, and that’s okay. Progress is the goal, not perfection.
4. COE Accredited and SCHEV Certified — A School You Can Trust
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t rubber-stamp credentials. They mean AVI meets rigorous standards for educational quality, financial integrity, and student outcomes. When you see these accreditations, you can trust that your investment is protected and your credential is legitimate.
We know that immigrant communities have been burned by predatory for-profit schools. AVI is not that school. Our accreditations, our track record, and our community reputation are the proof.
5. Financial Aid and Flexible Scheduling — Because Life Doesn’t Stop for School
School pickups. Work shifts. Family obligations. You live a full life, and your training program needs to work around it — not the other way around. AVI offers flexible scheduling options and financial aid for those who qualify, including acceptance of the GI Bill® for eligible veterans and military spouses. Our admissions team will walk you through every option with patience and clarity, in plain language you can understand.
Program Curriculum
300 Hours of Career-Focused English — Built for the Beauty Licensing Pathway
AVI’s ESL program is 300 hours of structured, purposeful English instruction. Every hour connects directly to the skills you’ll need to advance into a licensed beauty program, succeed on your Virginia state board exam, and communicate professionally in a salon or spa environment.
Core Skill Areas
Reading Comprehension
You’ll learn to read and understand the kinds of texts that appear on state board exams, licensing applications, professional training materials, and workplace safety documents. We work through dense, technical language together — building confidence one passage at a time.
Writing Skills
From completing professional forms and licensing applications to writing client notes and professional emails, writing in English is a skill you’ll use every day in a licensed career. We start where you are and build systematically.
Speaking & Oral Communication
Client consultation is the heart of beauty services. You’ll practice the professional conversations that happen every day in licensed salons and spas — greeting clients, asking questions, explaining services, making recommendations, and handling concerns. Confidence in spoken English is a skill, and skills can be learned.
Listening Comprehension
Understanding spoken instructions, following professional training content, and responding appropriately to clients and supervisors all require strong listening skills. We build these through structured practice and real-world simulation.
Grammar & Sentence Structure
Grammar doesn’t have to be intimidating. We focus on the grammar patterns that appear most frequently in professional communication and on standardized tests — the grammar that actually matters for your career.
Vocabulary: General and Beauty/Wellness Industry-Specific
General academic vocabulary. Beauty industry terminology. Virginia State Board exam vocabulary. Medical and anatomy terms used in esthetics and massage. We teach the words you’ll actually encounter — not a dictionary’s worth of terms you’ll never use.
Professional Communication & Workplace English
From how to introduce yourself at a job interview to how to navigate a professional disagreement with a coworker, professional communication in American workplaces has its own set of norms. We cover them directly and honestly.
Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
This is where AVI is uniquely different from any general ESL program in Northern Virginia. We integrate state board exam English preparation throughout the curriculum — the question formats, the vocabulary, the reading comprehension demands — so that when you’re ready to take your board exam, the English is not the barrier.
A Note on Program Sequencing
Many AVI students complete the ESL program as preparation for — or alongside — enrollment in one of AVI’s licensed beauty programs, including:
- Cosmetology (1,500 hours)
- Esthetics (600 hours)
- Nail Technology (150 hours)
- Massage Therapy (500 hours)
- Cosmetic Laser Technology
- Electrolysis
Talk to our admissions team about the best sequencing for your goals and your current English level.
Career Outcomes
English Opens Doors. A License Walks Through Them.
The ESL program at AVI is not a destination — it’s a launchpad. Here’s what’s on the other side of better English skills and a Virginia beauty license.
What Licensed Beauty Professionals Earn in Virginia
The Northern Virginia and DC metro labor market is one of the strongest in the country for licensed beauty professionals. Here’s a snapshot of what you can expect:
- Cosmetologists: Median hourly wages range from approximately $14–$22/hour as an employee, with significantly higher earning potential for booth renters and salon owners. The DC metro market supports premium pricing.
- Estheticians: One of the fastest-growing beauty specializations. Virginia-licensed estheticians work in medical spas, hotel spas, dermatology offices, and upscale salons — environments where bilingual skills command higher pay.
- Nail Technicians: Northern Virginia’s nail industry is large, diverse, and highly active. Licensed nail techs with strong client communication skills — including bilingual skills — are highly sought after.
- Massage Therapists: Virginia-licensed massage therapists work in spas, chiropractic offices, wellness centers, and independent practices. Demand in the NOVA market is strong and growing.

Why Bilingual Skills Are a Career Advantage — Not a Disadvantage
Northern Virginia is home to one of the largest and most diverse populations on the East Coast. Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Amharic, Arabic, Persian, Tagalog, Hindi — these are languages spoken by hundreds of thousands of potential clients in your backyard. A cosmetologist or esthetician who can communicate in a client’s native language is not just more comfortable to work with — they build deeper loyalty, generate more referrals, and grow faster.
Your bilingualism is not something to hide. At AVI, we’ll help you see it for what it is: a competitive advantage.
The Virginia Licensing Pathway
To practice professionally in Virginia, beauty professionals must:
- Complete the required training hours at an accredited school (like AVI)
- Pass the Virginia State Board written and practical exams
- Apply for and receive their Virginia professional license
- Maintain licensure through continuing education
AVI prepares you for every step of this pathway — including the English demands of the state board examination.
Your Enrollment Path
5 Clear Steps from Where You Are Today to a Licensed Career
We know that starting something new — especially in a language that isn’t your first — can feel overwhelming. So here’s exactly what the path looks like at AVI.
Step 1: Explore

Step 2: Apply

The application process is straightforward and our team is here to help you through it.
Step 3: Enroll & Begin Your ESL Program
Once you’re admitted, you’ll enroll and begin your 300-hour ESL program. You’ll meet your instructors and your cohort, begin building your skills, and start working toward the English proficiency you need to advance into licensed beauty training.
Step 4: Advance into Beauty Training

Tuition & Financial Aid
Real Pathways to Paying for Your Education
We will not pretend that school is free. We will also not pretend that you have to figure out how to pay for it alone. AVI offers a range of financial options to help qualified students make their education affordable.
Financial Aid for Eligible Students
AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs for students who qualify. If you’ve never navigated financial aid before — if the FAFSA feels like a foreign language all by itself — our admissions and financial aid team will walk you through the process step by step.
You may qualify for financial aid even if you have never used it before. The only way to find out is to ask.
GI Bill® Accepted
AVI is approved to accept GI Bill® education benefits. If you are a veteran, an active duty service member, or a military spouse or dependent who qualifies for GI Bill® benefits, those benefits can be applied to your AVI training programs. Contact our admissions team to learn more about how this works.
Payment Plans
AVI works with students to develop payment arrangements that fit their financial situations. We understand that you may not be able to pay everything at once, and we’d rather find a way to make it work than watch a motivated student walk away because of a financial barrier.
Scholarship Opportunities
Beauty industry organizations and foundations offer scholarships specifically for students from underrepresented backgrounds, including immigrant students and first-generation college students. Ask our admissions team about scholarship opportunities you may not know exist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real Questions from Real Students — Answered Honestly
Q: Do I need any English skills before I enroll in the ESL program? What are the prerequisites?
A: No prior formal English education is required to inquire about or apply to the ESL program. During the admissions conversation, our team will talk with you about your current English level and your goals so we can understand where you are and how the program can best serve you. If you’re uncertain whether the program is right for you, the best first step is simply to reach out and have a conversation. There is no penalty for asking.
Contact us to discuss your situation →
Q: Can I take ESL classes and still manage my family and work obligations? Is the schedule flexible?
A: AVI understands that our students are not traditional 18-year-old students with empty calendars. Many of our ESL and beauty program students are parents, caregivers, and workers managing complex schedules. We offer scheduling options designed to accommodate real life. Contact our admissions team to discuss what current scheduling looks like and whether it fits your situation. We will always try to find a solution before we say it can’t work.
Q: Will the ESL program actually help me pass the Virginia State Board exam? Is the English on the exam hard?
A: This is the most important question on this page, and we want to answer it directly. Yes — the Virginia State Board written exam does require reading comprehension in English. The exam presents scenarios and questions in professional, technical English that is different from everyday conversational English. Many students who communicate well in daily life still find the exam language challenging without specific preparation.
AVI’s ESL program addresses this directly. We integrate state board exam vocabulary, reading formats, and question structures into the curriculum specifically because we know this is the barrier that stands between our students and their license. Our goal is to make language a solved problem by the time you sit for your exam.
Q: Is AVI a legitimate, accredited school? How do I know I won’t waste my money?
A: AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) — a nationally recognized accrediting body — and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These accreditations require ongoing compliance with rigorous standards for academic quality, financial stability, and student outcomes. They are not purchased credentials.
We understand why this question matters. Immigrant communities have been targeted by unscrupulous schools that took tuition and delivered nothing. We encourage you to verify our accreditations directly, ask us hard questions, and talk to our graduates. We stand behind our record.
Q: After I complete the ESL program and get my beauty license, will AVI help me find a job?
A: AVI provides career support services to help our graduates transition into the professional workforce. This includes guidance on job searching, resume preparation, and connecting with the professional beauty community in Northern Virginia and the broader DC metro market. We also help students understand their options — employment at a salon or spa, booth rental, mobile services, and eventually salon ownership — so you can make informed decisions about your career path from day one.
Your bilingual skills are a genuine asset in this market. We’ll help you understand how to position them.
Q: What languages does AVI staff speak?
A: Our team includes multilingual staff members. Contact us directly at (703) 943-9841 to find out which languages we can support for your admissions conversation. We want this process to feel clear, not confusing — and we’ll do everything we can to communicate in a way that works for you.
