Objective :

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at AVI Career Training is a comprehensive 1,200-hour progressive language curriculum delivered across six structured proficiency levels (AVIESL A1– AVIESL A6). The program is aligned with international language standards established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (), progressing from Beginner (AVIESL A1) to Advanced/College-Ready (AVIESL A6 equivalent).

The ESL program is designed to equip students with the linguistic, academic, and cultural competencies required for success in higher education, professional environments, and everyday communication in the United States. Each level integrates communicative language teaching, functional English tasks, academic skill-building, and structured assessment benchmarks to ensure measurable proficiency gains.

Program Format

The ESL Program is available in both In-Class and Fully Online instructional formats. Students may choose the delivery method that best fits their needs. Regardless of delivery mode, the program provides structured grammar instruction, speaking and listening practice, reading development, writing workshops, and pronunciation training using the New English File series from Oxford University Press. All learning outcomes and assessments remain identical in both formats.2.      Program Purpose

  • The purpose of the AVI Career Training ESL Program is to:
  • Provide non-native speakers with systematic, level-based English instruction that promotes fluency, accuracy, and confidence.
  • Support immigrant, international, and multilingual students in achieving English proficiency necessary for college readiness, vocational training, and long-term workforce participation.
  • Strengthen students’ ability to navigate academic environments, professional workplace settings, and daily life interactions in an English-speaking society.

Program of Study Description – English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at AVI Career Training is an intensive, full-time language instruction program designed to develop students’ English proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The program serves international students seeking academic, professional, or personal English language development.

The ESL program consists of six progressive instructional levels (Levels A1–A6) aligned with internationally recognized English proficiency standards. Instruction emphasizes grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, conversation, reading comprehension, and academic writing skills.

The program requires a minimum of 18 clock hours per week Levels A1–A4 are delivered at 30 clock hours per week, while Levels A5–A6 are delivered at 20 clock hours per week, depending on student placement.

The total program length is 1,200 clock hours, completed in approximately 47 weeks. Students are evaluated through written exams, oral assessments, and classroom participation. Successful completion prepares students for academic study, professional communication, or further English proficiency advancement.

Program Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion, students will be able to:

Develop Comprehensive English Language Proficiency

  • Achieve measurable improvement across the four core language domains:
    Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing
  • Progress from survival English to advanced academic English across the six CEFR levels.

Build Academic Readiness (AVIESL A4 – AVIESL A6)

  • Demonstrate the ability to read academic texts, summarize key points, synthesize ideas, and produce structured essays.
  • Engage in classroom discussions, academic presentations, and collaborative learning tasks.
  • Master skills necessary for college-level English, including note-taking, analyzing readings, and writing research-supported assignments.

Strengthen Practical Communicative Competence

  • Use English confidently in everyday social interactions, workplace communication, and community settings.
  • Conduct meaningful conversations, give and follow directions, manage workplace tasks, and communicate professionally.

Improve Linguistic Accuracy

  • Apply correct grammatical structures across increasing levels of complexity.
  • Expand vocabulary from essential daily words to advanced academic and professional terminology.
  • Develop clear and understandable pronunciation using structured phonetic training.

Achieve Standardized Test Readiness (Upper Levels)

  • Build the language foundation needed to perform successfully on:
    TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test, and other recognized proficiency exams.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of academic lectures, articulate arguments, and write coherent essays suitable for exam standards.
