Common Questions

Financial Aid FAQ

Everything you need to know about funding your education at AVI Career Training.

How can I find out if I qualify for financial aid?
The easiest way to determine your eligibility is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) and meet with one of our Financial Aid Advisors. Eligibility is based on federal guidelines, your financial circumstances, and the program you choose. Many students are surprised to learn they qualify for grants, federal student loans, or other financial assistance.
Will financial aid make my education more affordable?
Financial aid can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket educational expenses if you qualify. Every student’s financial situation is unique, so the amount of aid available varies. Our Financial Aid Office will prepare a personalized estimate showing your tuition costs, available financial aid, and any remaining balance before you enroll.
Does applying for FAFSA or financial aid affect my credit score?
No. Completing the FAFSA and applying for federal student aid does not require a credit inquiry and will not impact your credit score. Most federal financial aid programs determine eligibility based on financial need and federal requirements—not your credit history.
What is FAFSA?
FAFSA stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It is the official application used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid programs such as Pell Grants, Direct Subsidized Loans, and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. Completing the FAFSA is free, and our Financial Aid Office is available to help you through the application process.
What types of financial aid are available?
Depending on your eligibility, students enrolled in approved Title IV programs may qualify for: Federal Pell Grants, Federal Direct Subsidized Loans, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Federal PLUS Loans (for eligible parents), and other federal or state assistance programs when available. Our Financial Aid Advisors will explain all available options and help you understand your financial aid package.
Can I receive financial aid if I attend part-time?
Financial aid eligibility depends on your enrollment status and the specific program in which you are enrolled. Some federal aid programs require at least half-time enrollment, while others have different requirements. Our Financial Aid Office can review your enrollment plans and explain which types of aid may be available for your situation.
Can financial aid cover books, uniforms, kits, or other educational supplies?
Yes. For eligible students, financial aid may be used to help pay for qualified educational expenses beyond tuition, including required books, uniforms, equipment, supplies, and student kits when applicable. Your Financial Aid Advisor will explain exactly which costs are included in your program’s Cost of Attendance.
What if my financial situation changes after I submit my FAFSA?
If your family’s financial circumstances change because of job loss, reduced income, unexpected medical expenses, or other significant events, please contact our Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. Depending on your situation and federal regulations, we may be able to review your file through a Professional Judgment process and determine whether additional consideration is appropriate.
Do I have to accept all of the financial aid I am offered?
No. You are not required to accept every type of financial aid included in your award package. For example, some students choose to accept grants but borrow less in student loans. Our Financial Aid Advisors will explain each option so you can make the decision that best fits your educational and financial goals.
I work full-time. Can I still qualify for financial aid?
Yes. Many AVI Career Training students work while attending school. Employment does not automatically prevent you from qualifying for financial aid. Eligibility is determined based on federal regulations and your individual financial circumstances.
I have children and family responsibilities. Am I still eligible?
Absolutely. Many of our students are parents balancing family, work, and school. Having dependents does not disqualify you from receiving financial aid. In fact, your household information is one of several factors considered during the financial aid process.
I’ve attended another college before. Can I still receive financial aid?
In many cases, yes. Previous college attendance does not automatically prevent you from receiving financial aid. However, your eligibility may depend on your prior use of federal student aid, loan limits, academic history, and federal regulations. Our Financial Aid Office can review your educational history and explain your remaining eligibility.
Are international students eligible for federal financial aid?
Federal financial aid is generally available only to eligible U.S. citizens and certain eligible non-citizens who meet federal eligibility requirements. International students who do not qualify for federal aid may still have access to alternative payment plans or other financing options. Our Admissions team can discuss the options available based on your individual circumstances.
How much will my program cost after financial aid?
Your final educational cost depends on the program you choose, your financial aid eligibility, available grants, loans you decide to accept, and other funding sources. Before enrollment, we’ll provide a personalized financial aid estimate so you’ll understand your expected costs and any remaining out-of-pocket expenses.
How long does the financial aid process take?
The timeline varies depending on how quickly your FAFSA and required documents are submitted. Most students complete the financial aid process within a few days to several weeks. Submitting all requested documents promptly helps avoid delays and ensures your financial aid can be processed as quickly as possible.
What other ways can I pay for school?
In addition to federal financial aid, students may also qualify for: Virginia DARS (Dept. for Aging and Rehabilitative Services), Employer Tuition Assistance, Workforce Development Programs, Military and Veteran Education Benefits (GI Bill), Private Education Loans, and Monthly Payment Plans offered by AVI Career Training. Our Admissions and Financial Aid teams can help you explore every available funding option.
Do I need good credit to receive federal financial aid?
No. Most federal student aid programs—including Pell Grants and Direct Student Loans—do not require good credit. Your eligibility is determined primarily through the FAFSA and federal financial aid regulations.
When should I apply for financial aid?
We recommend completing your FAFSA as soon as it becomes available for the academic year in which you plan to enroll. Applying early helps avoid delays and ensures you have enough time to complete the enrollment process before classes begin.
Can someone help me complete my FAFSA?
Yes. Our experienced Financial Aid Advisors are available to guide you through every step of the FAFSA process at no cost. We can help explain required documents, answer questions about eligibility, and make sure your application is completed correctly.
Why should I apply for financial aid even if I think I won’t qualify?
Many students assume they are not eligible for financial aid, only to discover they qualify for grants, federal student loans, or other assistance. Completing the FAFSA is free, and applying gives you the opportunity to learn what financial resources may be available before making your enrollment decision.
