Phlebotomy Technician Program Frequently Asked Questions

Virginia does not issue a state phlebotomy license that we could find, so the usual credential is a voluntary national certification. AVI prepares students for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Other organizations offer their own phlebotomy credentials with different eligibility rules, so check what your target employer asks for.
We found no state phlebotomy license in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Health Professions regulates 13 health boards, and phlebotomy is not one of them. A phlebotomist collects blood and other specimens, mainly by venipuncture and fingerstick, and prepares them for the lab. An EKG technician places electrodes and records the heart's electrical activity with an electrocardiograph. They are separate skills with separate NHA credentials (CPT and CET).
