Why Choose AVI for Barbering?
There are barbering programs out there that treat it like a footnote — a service tucked into a cosmetology catalog. That’s not what we do.
At AVI Career Training, barbering is a dedicated discipline. We take the craft seriously because we know you do too. Here’s what sets us apart:
1. We’re Accredited — and That Actually Matters
AVI Career Training is COE (Council on Occupational Education) accredited and SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) certified. That means when you complete this program, you’re eligible to sit for the Virginia State Board licensing exam — and your credential will be recognized by employers, shop owners, and licensing boards.
We’ve seen what happens when students enroll at unaccredited schools and can’t get licensed. That won’t happen here. Your investment is protected from day one.
2. Hands-On Training from Day One
Barbering is not learned in a lecture hall. It’s learned at the chair. From your earliest hours in the program, you’ll be working with real clients in a real training environment — building speed, sharpening technique, and developing the muscle memory that separates good barbers from great ones.
You’ll graduate with a portfolio of work and hundreds of hours of practical, live-client experience behind you.
3. You Learn Every Skill the Market Demands
Fades, tapers, hot towel shaves, beard shaping, lineup work, men’s color — we cover it all. The Virginia State Board exam tests a broad range of barbering competencies, and our curriculum is built to ensure you walk into that exam ready to pass it and into the shop ready to perform from the jump.
4. Located in the Heart of Northern Virginia’s Opportunity Zone
Our school is in Vienna, Virginia — right at the intersection of some of the DMV’s most lucrative markets for licensed barbers: Tysons Corner, Fairfax, Reston, McLean, Arlington, and Falls Church. You’re not training in a vacuum. You’re training in a region with dense population, high disposable income, and real demand for skilled barbers.
5. A Culture That Gets It
Barbering isn’t just a trade. For a lot of people who walk through our doors, it’s a calling — rooted in community, creative expression, and cultural identity. We don’t sanitize that. We honor it. Our environment is inclusive, our instruction is culturally aware, and our community is built around the belief that barbering deserves the same respect as any other skilled profession.
Program Curriculum — What You’ll Learn in 1,500 Hours

Career Outcomes — What Happens After You Graduate
Let’s talk numbers, titles, and real opportunity.
What Virginia Barbers Earn
Licensed barbers in Virginia can earn $35,000–$65,000+ annually, depending on location, skill level, clientele, and whether they’re booth renting, working on commission, or running their own shop. In high-demand markets like Tysons, Arlington, and Fairfax, skilled barbers with loyal clientele regularly exceed those figures.
The math is simple: a barber seeing 8–12 clients a day, five days a week, at $30–$50 per service is generating meaningful income. Your license is your earning power.
Where You Can Work
- Barbershops — Traditional shops, upscale grooming lounges, urban barbershops
- Salons with Barbering Services — Crossover spaces that serve a broader clientele
- Hotel & Resort Spas — Premium grooming services in hospitality settings
- Your Own Shop — Booth rental as a self-employed barber, or eventually owning your own business
- Entertainment & Media — Film, TV, and editorial barbering for production work
Career Titles You Can Hold

- Barber Instructor (with additional hours and licensure)

The right question isn’t just “How much does barber school cost?” It’s “What will I earn with a barber license compared to what I’m earning now — and how long until this investment pays for itself?” For most of our graduates, the answer is measured in months, not years.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need any experience or prior education to enroll in the barbering program?
No prior barbering experience is required. You do need a high school diploma or GED to enroll. If you’re passionate about the craft and committed to completing the program, that’s the foundation we build on. We’ve trained students who’ve never held a pair of clippers professionally — and watched them become exceptional barbers.
2. How long does it take to complete the program?
Virginia requires 1,500 hours of training to be eligible for the state barber license exam. The actual calendar time to complete those hours depends on your schedule — full-time students will finish faster than part-time students. Contact us to discuss what a realistic timeline looks like based on your availability.
3. What are the Virginia barber license requirements after I graduate?
To become a licensed barber in Virginia, you must:
- Complete a state-approved 1,500-hour barbering program (✅ AVI is state-approved)
- Pass the Virginia State Board written theory examination
- Pass the Virginia State Board practical skills examination
- Submit your application and fees to the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR)
We prepare you for every step of this process. You won’t be figuring it out on your own.
4. Does AVI offer flexible scheduling? I’m currently working.
We understand that most of our students have real responsibilities — jobs, families, and financial obligations that don’t pause while they’re in school. Contact our admissions team to discuss current schedule offerings and find out what options are available that fit your life. Flexibility is something we take seriously.
5. Does AVI help graduates find jobs after the program?
Yes. We don’t hand you a certificate and wish you luck. Our team provides career support and professional development guidance to help you enter the job market prepared. Beyond direct support, completing a program at a COE-accredited, SCHEV-certified school immediately elevates your profile with employers — it signals that your training met rigorous standards. In a field where shop owners can tell the difference between a well-trained barber and someone who cut corners, your credential from AVI opens doors that others can’t.
