Why Choose AVI for Your Barbering Training?

Choosing a barber school is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The school you pick determines how fast you get licensed, how prepared you are on day one, and whether your investment pays off. Here’s why students in the Tysons corridor choose AVI.

1. COE Accreditation — The Gold Standard for Beauty Education

AVI Career Training holds accreditation from the Council on Occupational Education (COE), the specialized accreditor for career and technical programs recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. That’s not the same as a generic regional college accreditor — COE is specifically designed to evaluate the quality of hands-on, career-focused training like ours.

What that means for you:
– You can access federal financial aid (for those who qualify)
– Your credential carries weight with Virginia licensing authorities and employers
– You’re training at a school held to rigorous educational standards — not a fly-by-night operation

AVI is also SCHEV-certified (approved by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia), giving you a second layer of verification that this program is legitimate, compliant, and built to get you licensed.

2. Instructor-Led, Hands-On Training From Day One

Barbering is a craft. You can’t learn a fade by reading about it. At AVI, you start working with real tools on real clients early in your training — not after months of theory. Our instructors are licensed professionals who’ve worked in the industry, not just academics who’ve studied it.

The ratio of student to instructor attention at AVI is built for learning — not for warehousing students. You’ll get feedback on your technique, corrections in real time, and the kind of mentorship that a large community college simply cannot offer when you’re one of 40 students in a lecture hall.

3. Location Built for Northern Virginia — Not Downtown DC

You’re in NoVA. Your future clients are in NoVA. Why commute 45 minutes into DC or Maryland to train?

AVI is located at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 — right in the heart of the Tysons corridor, accessible from Vienna, Fairfax, Reston, McLean, Herndon, Falls Church, Arlington, and surrounding communities. You train close to home, build relationships in the local market, and position yourself to work — or eventually own — right in one of the fastest-growing barbering markets in the Mid-Atlantic.

4. GI Bill® Accepted — Honoring Those Who Served

AVI Career Training is proud to accept the GI Bill®, making our Barbering program an accessible path for veterans and active-duty service members pursuing a second career. Northern Virginia is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the country. If you’ve served, your education benefits can help fund your training — talk to our admissions team to learn what you may qualify for.

5. Financial Aid Available for Those Who Qualify

Tuition shouldn’t be the wall that stands between you and a career you love. AVI participates in federal financial aid programs for eligible students, and our admissions team will walk you through your options — grants, loans, and other funding sources — before you ever commit to enrollment.

What You’ll Learn: The AVI Barbering Curriculum

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of training at a state-approved school before you can sit for the Virginia State Board licensing exam. Every hour of AVI’s barbering program is structured to build toward that exam — and beyond it.

Important: Online courses, YouTube tutorials, and uncertified workshops do not qualify toward Virginia’s 1,500-hour requirement. There is no shortcut to licensure. To legally call yourself a licensed barber in Virginia and charge clients for your services, you must complete your hours at a state-approved school like AVI.

Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate

The Numbers Are Real

Barbering isn’t a backup plan. In Northern Virginia — one of the highest-income regions in the United States — skilled barbers are earning serious money. Here’s what the market looks like:

Career Stage Estimated Annual Earnings
Entry-Level Licensed Barber (employed) $35,000 – $50,000
Experienced Barber (2–5 years, strong clientele) $55,000 – $75,000
Master Barber / Suite Owner $75,000 – $100,000+
Shop Owner / Employer Varies — limited only by business skill

Earnings estimates reflect Northern Virginia market conditions and are based on industry data. Individual results vary.

The NoVA and DMV market is uniquely positioned for high barber earnings because of:
High population density and disposable income in communities like McLean, Reston, Fairfax, and Arlington
A large and loyal male grooming clientele — men who get haircuts every 2–4 weeks, not twice a year
A growing demand for specialized services — fades, beard grooming, hot towel shaves — that command $40–$80+ per service at premium shops
A strong veteran and government workforce population that values consistent, professional grooming

Job Titles You’re Qualified For

After passing the Virginia State Board exam, you’ll be eligible to work as:

  • Licensed Barber (employed, barbershop or salon)
  • Independent Booth Renter (your own business, someone else’s space)
  • Suite Owner / Solo Practitioner
  • Barbershop Owner / Manager
  • Barber Educator (with additional experience)
  • Brand Ambassador or Platform Artist

Step 2: Financial Aid & Enrollment Planning

Once you’re interested in moving forward, our team will walk you through financial aid eligibility (if applicable), GI Bill® options (if you’re a veteran), and your enrollment timeline. There’s no pressure — just clarity so you can make an informed decision.

Step 3: Apply & Enroll

Complete your application and enrollment paperwork. We’ll confirm your start date, review program requirements together, and make sure you arrive on day one ready to learn.

Step 4: Complete Your 1,500 Hours

Train, practice, grow. Work on real clients in AVI’s learning environment, get feedback from instructors, and build the technical confidence to perform at a professional level.

Step 5: Graduate & Sit for the Virginia State Board Exam

Upon completing your 1,500 hours, you’ll be eligible to sit for the Virginia State Board licensing exam — both the written and practical components. AVI’s program is built around this exam. You won’t be going in cold.

Step 6: Get Licensed. Get to Work.

Once you pass your boards, you’re a licensed barber in the Commonwealth of Virginia. You can work legally in any licensed barbershop or salon, rent a booth, or begin building toward your own shop.

Tuition & Financial Aid

We believe financial barriers shouldn’t determine who gets access to a skilled trade. That’s why AVI Career Training is committed to providing clear, accessible information about the cost of your education and the options available to help fund it.

How to Pay for Your Barbering Training

Federal Financial Aid
AVI’s COE accreditation makes us eligible to participate in federal student aid programs. To find out what you qualify for, complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov and speak with our admissions team.

GI Bill® Benefits
If you’re a veteran, active-duty service member, or dependent covered by GI Bill® benefits, AVI Career Training accepts VA education benefits. Our team can help you navigate the process of applying your benefits toward your barbering training. This is one of the most underused and most powerful funding options available to Northern Virginia’s large veteran community.

Payment Plans & Other Options
Our admissions team will discuss all available options during your enrollment consultation, including payment structure. We want you to start school with a financial plan — not a financial surprise.

Think about the return on investment: A licensed barber in Northern Virginia can earn $45,000–$75,000 or more per year. Your training investment doesn’t just open a door — it puts you on a career path that can pay for itself within your first few years of work.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need any prior experience to enroll in the Barbering program?

No prior barbering experience is required. You need a high school diploma or GED to enroll. If you have a passion for the craft and a willingness to put in the hours, AVI’s program is designed to take you from beginner to board-ready. Many of our most skilled graduates started with nothing more than an interest and a pair of clippers they’d been practicing with at home.

2. How long will it take me to complete the program?

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours to sit for the state licensing exam. How quickly you accumulate those hours depends on your schedule — how many days per week you attend and which schedule option works for your life. Contact our admissions team to discuss current schedule offerings and find the pace that works for you.

The important thing to understand: 1,500 hours is not years of your life. With consistent attendance, students complete the program in a timeframe that surprises most people. The sooner you start, the sooner you’re licensed.

3. What does the Virginia barber licensing exam involve?

The Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology administers a two-part licensing exam:

  • Written Examination: Tests your knowledge of theory, sanitation, anatomy, Virginia regulations, and the science behind barbering services
  • Practical Examination: A hands-on performance evaluation where you demonstrate cutting, shaving, and related services on a live model

AVI’s entire 1,500-hour curriculum is built around both components. You’ll receive written exam content review and practical mock assessments before your exam date. You won’t be guessing when you walk into that testing room.

4. Can I work while attending AVI’s Barbering program?

Many AVI students work while in school. The feasibility depends on your schedule, the number of hours per week you’re attending, and your personal situation. We encourage you to speak honestly with our admissions team about your obligations — we’ll help you figure out a schedule that gives you the best chance to succeed without burning out.

5. Does AVI help with job placement after graduation?

While AVI does not guarantee employment (no honest school does), we are deeply connected to the Northern Virginia beauty and wellness community. Our instructors and staff can offer professional guidance, industry connections, and resume support as you begin your job search. The barbering market in NoVA is genuinely strong — licensed, skilled barbers are in demand — and your board certification will be your most powerful job application credential.

Ready to Become a Licensed Barber in Virginia?

This is the part where a lot of people pause. They think about it a little longer. They tell themselves they’ll look into it next month.

And then next month becomes next year, and they’re still exactly where they are right now.

The barbers who are making $65,000 in Fairfax and $80,000 in McLean right now? They made a decision. They started. They showed up for 1,500 hours. They passed their boards. And now they’re doing what they love and getting paid well for it.

That can be you. But only if you take the first step.

Here’s what that step looks like:

  • Fill out our short inquiry form — it takes less than two minutes and commits you to nothing
  • Speak with an AVI admissions team member who will answer every question you have honestly
  • Explore your financial aid options — you may qualify for more than you think
  • Choose your start date — and begin the most skill-building, career-defining chapter of your professional life
