Why Choose AVI Career Training for Massage Therapy?
There are other programs in Northern Virginia. Here’s what makes AVI the one that working adults, career changers, and wellness professionals keep choosing — and finishing.
—
1. COE Accreditation and SCHEV Certification: Your Credentials Mean Something
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t marketing badges — they’re the institutional credentials that signal to Virginia’s Department of Health Professions, to employers, and to licensing boards that your training meets rigorous, independently verified standards.
When you graduate from AVI, your certificate carries weight. You’re not presenting a certificate of completion from an unaccredited course — you’re presenting proof of training from a school held to standards that protect you and your future clients.
> Why this matters for you: Some online courses and unaccredited “certification” programs look like shortcuts. In Virginia, they’re dead ends. The Commonwealth requires graduates of an accredited program to sit for the licensing board exam. AVI’s accreditation means your 500 hours count toward exactly that.
—
2. Small Cohorts. Real Instructors. You’re Not a Number Here.
Large chain schools enroll hundreds of students and cycle them through at volume. AVI operates differently. Our cohorts are intentionally small, which means your instructors know your name, your learning style, and where you need extra practice — not just your student ID.
Our massage therapy instructors are licensed, practicing professionals who bring real clinical knowledge into the classroom. They’ve worked in spas, sports medicine settings, chiropractic offices, and private practice. What they teach you isn’t theoretical — it’s what actually works when a client is on your table.
—
3. Every Hour Is Designed to Get You Licensed and Employed
AVI’s 500-hour curriculum isn’t padded with filler. Every hour — from your first Swedish massage technique to your final board exam prep session — is structured around one goal: preparing you to pass Virginia’s licensing requirements and walk into your first professional role with real confidence.
We don’t believe in semester drift. We don’t believe in burying career support at the end of the program. From orientation forward, you know where you’re going and what it takes to get there.
—
4. Flexible Scheduling for People Who Already Have a Life
Most of our students are juggling jobs, families, and a dozen other obligations. We understand that “just take time off and go to school” is not a plan — it’s a fantasy. AVI offers scheduling options designed to fit around your existing responsibilities so you can make the transition to a new career without disrupting your current one.
Ask our admissions team about current schedule formats when you connect. (703) 943-9841

5. Vienna, VA — Right in the Heart of Northern Virginia’s Wellness Market
Our campus at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 sits at the center of one of the most affluent, wellness-focused markets on the East Coast. Tysons, McLean, Reston, Herndon, Fairfax, Falls Church — these communities have high concentrations of professionals willing to invest in massage therapy for stress relief, injury recovery, and performance. You’ll be training where the clients already are.
—
The 500-Hour Massage Therapy Curriculum: What You’ll Actually Learn
AVI’s massage therapy program is 500 hours of structured, hands-on training aligned with Virginia’s licensure requirements. Here’s what that looks like in practice:
—
Core Modalities — The Techniques Clients Ask for Most
Swedish Massage
The foundation of professional massage therapy. You’ll master long, flowing effleurage strokes, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration techniques — building the muscle memory and clinical intuition that separates competent therapists from exceptional ones.
Deep Tissue Massage
For clients dealing with chronic tension, postural issues, or muscular pain, deep tissue work is essential. You’ll learn to work effectively with fascia and deeper muscle layers while protecting yourself from burnout and injury — a critical skill most programs underteach.
Sports Massage
Northern Virginia’s athletic community — runners, cyclists, CrossFit athletes, weekend warriors — is a major client base. Sports massage training prepares you to work with pre-event preparation, post-event recovery, and injury prevention in partnership with coaches and healthcare providers.
Prenatal Massage (Introduction)
Safe, effective techniques for pregnant clients. A high-value specialization that opens doors in spa settings and private practice.
—
Clinical Sciences — The Knowledge Behind the Touch
Anatomy & Physiology
You can’t treat what you don’t understand. AVI’s anatomy and physiology coursework covers the skeletal system, muscular system, circulatory system, lymphatic system, and nervous system — with direct application to massage technique and contraindications.
Pathology & Contraindications
Knowing when not to massage is as important as knowing how. You’ll learn to identify conditions that require medical consultation, modification of technique, or avoidance — protecting both your clients and your license.
Kinesiology Fundamentals
Understanding how the body moves — and where movement breaks down — gives you a framework for targeted, results-oriented sessions.
—
Business & Professional Practice
Ethics and Professional Standards
Scope of practice, boundaries, informed consent, documentation — the professional scaffolding that keeps your license intact and your clients safe.
Business Fundamentals for Massage Therapists
Whether you’re working in a spa, joining a chiropractic practice, or building a private clientele, you’ll learn how to present yourself professionally, retain clients, and think about your career strategically.
Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
The MBLEx (Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination) is your gateway to licensure. AVI’s board prep component is integrated throughout the program — not bolted on at the end. You’ll take practice assessments, review high-frequency exam content, and enter your exam with preparation behind you, not anxiety.
—
Hands-On Clinical Hours
A significant portion of your 500 hours is devoted to supervised practical experience — real massage sessions performed on real people, reviewed by licensed instructors. This is where technique becomes intuition, where classroom knowledge becomes clinical confidence.
You will give and receive massage therapy throughout the program. You’ll learn what good work feels like from the client’s perspective — which makes you a better therapist from your very first professional session.

Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate?
Let’s talk honestly about what this career actually looks like — because you deserve real information, not recruitment brochure fantasy.
—
The Numbers
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, massage therapy is projected to grow significantly faster than average over the coming decade. The demand isn’t slowing down — it’s accelerating as massage therapy becomes more integrated into mainstream healthcare, athletic recovery, and stress management.
In Virginia, licensed massage therapists report earnings across a wide range depending on setting, specialization, and business model:
The Northern Virginia / DC corridor is not a typical market. This region has one of the highest concentrations of high-income households in the United States — households where massage therapy is not a luxury budget item, it’s a regular wellness expense. As a licensed therapist here, you’re not competing for the scraps of a saturated market. You’re entering a market that is actively looking for qualified practitioners.

—
Step 3: Confirm Enrollment and Financial Plan
Once you’re accepted, we’ll work with you on the financial side — reviewing your financial aid eligibility, GI Bill® benefits if applicable, and payment options. We’ll confirm your start date and schedule, and you’ll know exactly what to expect before your first day.
—
Step 4: Complete Your 500 Hours
Show up. Do the work. AVI’s instructors are with you every step of the way. You’ll progress through theory and hands-on labs, accumulate your clinical hours, and complete your board exam preparation.
—
Step 5: Pass the MBLEx and Get Licensed
After graduation, you’ll sit for the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). Pass the exam, complete Virginia’s application process through the Department of Health Professions, and you are a Licensed Massage Therapist in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
From there? The career is yours to build.

Tuition and Financial Aid: Real Investment, Real Support
AVI Career Training is committed to making this path accessible — not just aspirational.
Financial Aid is available for students who qualify. Our admissions team will walk you through the application process and help you understand your options before you commit to anything.
GI Bill® Benefits are accepted at AVI. If you are a veteran or eligible dependent, your service may cover a significant portion of your tuition and fees. We are here to help you navigate that process — it shouldn’t be complicated, and with our support, it won’t be.
Payment options are available. We understand that writing one check for an entire program isn’t realistic for most working adults. Ask our team about how we structure payment to fit your situation.
We will never hide numbers from you or pressure you into enrollment before you have a full financial picture. That’s not how we operate.

Frequently Asked Questions
—
Do I need any prior experience or education to enroll in AVI’s massage therapy program?
No prior massage experience is required. AVI’s 500-hour program is designed to take you from beginner to board-ready. What we look for is genuine motivation — a real desire to learn a skilled trade and build a meaningful career. If that’s you, we want to hear from you. A high school diploma or GED is typically required for enrollment; contact our admissions team to confirm current requirements.
—
How long does it take to complete the 500-hour program?
Your completion timeline depends on your schedule and the format you enroll in. Many students complete the program in less than a year while maintaining part-time or full-time work. When you speak with our admissions team, they can give you a realistic timeline based on the current schedule options and your availability.
—
What is the Virginia licensing exam, and how does AVI prepare me for it?
Virginia requires licensed massage therapists to pass the MBLEx — the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination — administered by the FSMTB. The exam covers anatomy, physiology, pathology, kinesiology, and professional ethics. AVI integrates board exam preparation throughout the program, not just as a final-week review. By the time you finish your 500 hours, you’ve been preparing for the MBLEx from the start.
—
Can I use my GI Bill® benefits to pay for the program?
Yes. AVI Career Training accepts GI Bill® benefits. If you are a veteran or an eligible dependent of a veteran, your benefits may cover a substantial portion of your tuition and fees. Reach out to our admissions team and they will help you confirm your eligibility and start the paperwork. (703) 943-9841
—
Does AVI provide job placement support after graduation?
AVI’s career support goes beyond handing you a diploma and wishing you luck. Our team can provide guidance on resume preparation, portfolio building, and connecting with employers in the Northern Virginia and DC metro area wellness market. We have relationships with spas, clinical practices, and wellness centers in the region. We are invested in your success after graduation — because your outcomes are our reputation.
—
What’s the difference between AVI and an online massage therapy course I’ve seen advertised?
This is an important question, and we’ll give you a straight answer: online massage therapy courses cannot make you a licensed massage therapist in Virginia. Full stop. The Commonwealth of Virginia requires completion of an accredited, in-person program before you can sit for the MBLEx licensing exam. Hands-on supervised clinical hours are a non-negotiable part of Virginia’s licensure pathway — and they cannot be performed over Zoom. If you encounter an online course claiming to certify you as a massage therapist, look carefully at whether that certificate has any standing with Virginia’s licensing board. AVI’s COE-accredited, SCHEV-certified program does.

Ready to Build the Career You’ve Been Thinking About?
You’ve been researching this long enough to know what you want. The question now is whether you’re going to take the step — or keep postponing it.
Every month you wait is a month you’re still in the job that isn’t working for you. Every month you wait is a month someone else — someone who started at AVI six months ago — is building their clientele, passing their boards, and doing work they love.
AVI Career Training’s 500-hour Massage Therapy program is enrolling now. Seats in each cohort are limited by design — because we keep our class sizes small enough to actually teach you.
