Why Choose AVI Career Training for Barbering?
There’s no shortage of barbering programs in the DC metro area. So why do students from Vienna, Fairfax, Tysons Corner, McLean, Falls Church, Herndon, Reston, and Sterling choose AVI?
Because here, barbering isn’t an afterthought — it’s a purpose-built program taught by people who know the craft, built for a community as diverse as Northern Virginia itself.
—
1. COE Accreditation: Your Credential Actually Means Something
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). That’s not marketing language — it’s the difference between a credential that opens doors and one that raises eyebrows. When you hand your license application to the Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, your education will be standing on solid ground.
Fly-by-night schools exist. We are not one of them.
—
2. You’ll Learn to Work on Every Client Who Walks Through the Door
Northern Virginia is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse regions in the United States. Your future client base will include people with 4C coils, silky straight hair, coarse waves, fine European textures, and everything in between. A curriculum that only trains you on one hair type isn’t training — it’s a limitation.
At AVI, multicultural, multi-texture training isn’t a special module tacked onto the end. It’s woven into everything we do. You’ll graduate ready to serve every person who sits in your chair — and in Northern Virginia, that’s the only way to build a real clientele.
—
3. Small Classes. Instructors Who Know Your Name.
AVI is not a factory. We are not processing hundreds of students through a pipeline designed for volume. Our intentionally small class sizes mean your instructors are actually watching your technique, correcting your fade in real time, and investing in your growth — not just your clock hours.
When you graduate, you’ll have the confidence that comes from real, supervised repetition — not from watching someone else work while you waited your turn.
—
4. A Location That Works for Northern Virginia Life
We’re located at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 — right in the heart of the Northern Virginia corridor, accessible from Tysons, Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, Fairfax, McLean, and beyond. No cross-state commutes. No wondering whether an out-of-state school is actually preparing you for the Virginia licensing exam. We’re here, we’re local, and we understand what it takes to pass the Virginia State Board.
The hours and money you’d spend commuting to a DC or Maryland school? Put them toward building your career instead.
—
5. Virginia-Aligned Curriculum from Day One
The Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology has specific requirements for licensure. Every hour of AVI’s barbering program is structured with those requirements in mind. You won’t be studying material irrelevant to your exam or learning a curriculum built for another state’s standards. You’ll be preparing — systematically and intentionally — for Virginia licensure, because that’s the only finish line that matters.
—
What You’ll Learn: The AVI Barbering Curriculum
AVI’s Barbering Program is a 1,500-hour, hands-on training experience designed to take you from foundational theory to client-ready skill — and then all the way to the Virginia State Board exam.
Here’s what’s inside:
—
Core Technical Skills
Haircuts & Clipper Work
The foundation of every barbering career. You’ll master fades, tapers, skin fades, line-ups, scissor cuts, and texturizing techniques across a full spectrum of hair types and densities. You’ll learn to read the hair before you ever pick up a tool.
Beard Shaping & Grooming
Modern barbering is as much about the beard as it is about the head. You’ll develop precision in shaping, detailing, and maintaining facial hair — the kind of work clients pay premium rates for and return to every two to three weeks like clockwork.
Hot Towel Shaves
A traditional straight-razor shave is a skill that sets a barber apart. You’ll learn proper preparation, technique, and safety — giving your clients an experience that no at-home razor can replicate. This is a revenue-generating service that builds loyalty and reputation.
Men’s Styling & Finishing
Cuts are only part of the picture. You’ll learn the styling products, finishing techniques, and professional recommendations that turn a great cut into a complete client experience — and a satisfied client into a regular one.
—
Science & Theory Foundation
You can’t solve a problem you don’t understand. AVI’s curriculum builds your technical skills on a foundation of real knowledge:
—
Business & Professional Development
The most talented barber in the room can still fail without business fundamentals. AVI prepares you for more than the exam:
—
Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
Every section of AVI’s curriculum is mapped to the Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s examination requirements — both the written theory exam and the practical skills assessment. As you approach your final hours, you’ll engage in structured review, mock practical sessions, and examination strategy so that the licensing exam isn’t a surprise — it’s a formality you’ve been preparing for since day one.

Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate?
A License Is the Beginning, Not the End
Completing AVI’s 1,500-hour Barbering Program and passing the Virginia State Board exam makes you a Virginia Licensed Barber — and that credential is the key to a career with more earning paths, more flexibility, and more long-term upside than most people expect when they start.
—
What Can You Do With a Virginia Barber License?
Booth Renter
Rent your own chair in an established shop, set your own schedule, build your own clientele, and keep your own earnings. This is the fastest path to income independence for many licensed barbers. Once your book is full, you control your earning ceiling.
Commission Barber / Employed Barber
Work for an established shop on a commission or hourly basis. Lower risk, built-in clientele, and the support of an existing business while you build your reputation. A smart starting point for many new graduates.
Shop Owner / Entrepreneur
The long game. Many barbers spend their early years building skills, a client base, and capital — then open their own shop. The barbershop is one of the most resilient small businesses in any neighborhood. It’s recession-resistant, relationship-driven, and community-rooted.
Platform Barber / Educator
Talented barbers with strong technique and communication skills can build careers on stages, at trade shows, and in education — teaching other barbers, representing product brands, or building a following that generates income alongside the chair.
Traveling or Session Barber
Work with film and television production, editorial and photography, or celebrity clientele. Your Virginia license is recognized across state lines through reciprocity agreements, making this a genuinely portable career.
—
The Northern Virginia & DMV Advantage
You’re not entering a struggling market. The Washington DC metro area — including Northern Virginia — is one of the most economically robust regions in the country. It has a large, high-earning professional class, a military presence that demands sharp, maintained appearances, and a diverse population that actively seeks skilled barbers who understand their hair.
Barbers who build strong clientele in Northern Virginia aren’t scraping by — they’re building businesses.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists can earn a wide range based on location, clientele, and business model. In high-cost-of-living markets like Northern Virginia and the DC metro corridor, experienced barbers with established books regularly earn well above national median figures — particularly those who own their space or rent their booth.
Barbering is not a guaranteed income. It rewards those who put in the work, develop the skill, and build real relationships. AVI prepares you to do all three.
—
Why Your Virginia License Is Valuable Nationwide
A Virginia barber license isn’t just good in Virginia. Virginia participates in reciprocity agreements with numerous states, and the licensure pathway you complete at AVI — 1,500 hours plus board exams — meets or exceeds the requirements in most U.S. jurisdictions. If you’re military-connected and move frequently, or simply value flexibility in where life takes you, a Virginia barber license is a credential you can carry.

Your Path from Interested to Licensed: How Enrollment Works
We’ve made the process clear because we know that uncertainty is one of the biggest reasons qualified candidates never take the first step. Here’s exactly how this works.
—
Step 1: Connect With Us
Fill out our contact form or give us a call at (703) 943-9841. Tell us about yourself — your background, your schedule needs, your questions. This isn’t a high-pressure sales call. It’s a real conversation with someone who can tell you whether AVI’s barbering program is the right fit for your life right now.
—
Step 2: Tour Our Facility
Come see where you’ll be training. Walk through our facility at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182. Meet instructors. See the learning environment. Ask the questions you actually have — not the ones you think you’re supposed to ask. We want you to make a fully informed decision, and you can’t do that from a website alone.
—
Step 3: Review Your Financial Options
Before you commit to anything, sit down with our admissions team to review your financial aid eligibility, payment options, and — if you’re military-connected — how your GI Bill® benefits apply. We’ll walk you through what the investment looks like and how to make it work. We don’t want money to be the reason a qualified candidate doesn’t get their license.
—
Step 4: Enroll and Begin
Once you’ve made your decision and completed the enrollment process, you start. You walk through those doors as a student. You begin building the skills, logging the hours, and developing the technical foundation that leads to licensure.
—
Step 5: Graduate, Pass Your Board Exam, and Get Licensed
Complete your 1,500 hours. Pass the Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology written and practical exams. Receive your Virginia Barber License. That’s the milestone that changes everything — the credential that lets you sit in any shop in the commonwealth, set your price, and start building your career.
—
Tuition & Financial Aid: Let’s Talk About the Investment
We’ll be honest with you: barbering school is a real financial commitment. We won’t pretend otherwise, and we won’t bury the conversation in vague language.
What we will tell you is this: there are real resources available to help you pay for this education, and we will help you understand every option before you sign anything.
—
Financial Aid Is Available for Those Who Qualify
AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs. Students who meet eligibility requirements may qualify for aid that significantly reduces their out-of-pocket costs. Every student’s situation is different — family size, income, dependency status, and other factors all play a role in what you qualify for.
The only way to know what you’re eligible for is to apply. Our admissions team will walk you through the process.
—
GI Bill® Benefits Are Accepted
If you’re an active-duty service member, veteran, or qualifying military spouse, AVI accepts GI Bill® benefits. We understand the unique needs of military-connected students — including the need for a portable, recognized credential and scheduling that can flex with the demands of military life.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. More information about GI Bill® benefits is available at benefits.va.gov.
—
Payment Plans and Other Options
We don’t expect every student to write a check for the full tuition on day one. Our admissions team works with students on payment structures and can discuss all available options during your enrollment conversation.
Speak with an admissions advisor about tuition and aid — no pressure, no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any prior experience or education to enroll in the barbering program?
No prior barbering experience is required to enroll. Many of our most successful students come in having never held a pair of clippers professionally — just a passion for the craft and the drive to develop real skill. You do need a high school diploma or GED to enroll. If you have questions about your specific situation, call us at (703) 943-9841 or reach out through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer.
—
How many hours does it take to become a licensed barber in Virginia, and how long will that take me?
The Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires 1,500 clock hours of approved barbering education before you’re eligible to sit for the licensing exam. At AVI, your schedule will determine how quickly you accumulate those hours. We’ll discuss scheduling options — including how our program fits around existing work or family obligations — during your admissions conversation. For many full-time students, 1,500 hours is a defined, finite commitment with a clear end in sight. It moves faster than you’d expect once you’re in it.
—
Is the AVI barbering program legitimate — will my license actually be recognized?
Yes. AVI Career Training is COE (Council on Occupational Education) accredited and SCHEV certified, and our barbering program is structured to meet the requirements of the Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Your education here prepares you to sit for — and pass — the actual Virginia licensing exam. Once licensed, your credential is issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia, not by AVI. It’s a state-issued professional license recognized statewide and with reciprocity in many other states.
—
What does the Virginia State Board licensing exam actually involve, and does AVI prepare me for it?
The Virginia barber licensing exam has two components: a written theory examination covering the academic and scientific content of your training, and a practical skills examination where you demonstrate your technical abilities in a supervised setting. AVI’s curriculum prepares you for both. As you approach graduation, your instruction will include structured review of exam content areas, practical mock sessions, and exam-taking guidance. We don’t consider our job done when you finish your hours — we consider it done when you pass your boards.
—
I have a job and a family. Can I actually make this work schedule-wise?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear — and it’s a legitimate one. We won’t give you a canned answer here. What we will do is have an honest conversation with you about your availability, your obligations, and how our current scheduling options match up with your life. Reach out and let’s talk through what’s actually possible. Many of our students have navigated exactly the situation you’re describing. Some have made it work. Some have needed to wait for the right moment. We’d rather help you figure out the truth than pressure you into a commitment that doesn’t fit your life.
