Why Choose AVI Career Training for Your ESL Program?

There are ESL options all over Northern Virginia — community colleges, tutoring centers, language apps. But none of them give you what AVI gives you. Here’s why our students keep choosing us, and why they finish what they start.

1. This Isn’t Generic ESL — It’s Career English

At NOVA or a tutoring center, you study English. At AVI, you study English in the context of your career path. Our curriculum is built around the language you will actually use: consulting with clients, describing services, reading product labels, communicating with coworkers and supervisors, and — critically — passing the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology licensing exams.

You won’t spend weeks on grammar exercises that have nothing to do with your life. You’ll practice real conversations you’ll have on the salon floor, at the front desk, and in the treatment room.

This is ESL with a destination.

2. Small Classes. Real Attention. No Getting Lost.

Large community college ESL programs can have 30, 40, even 50 students in a single classroom. At AVI, our classes are intentionally small. Your instructor knows your name. They know where you’re struggling. They know what you need next.

For students who have ever felt embarrassed about their English level — who have ever stayed quiet in a classroom because they were afraid of making a mistake — our environment is different. We have trained instructors who understand what it takes to learn a new language as an adult, and who will never make you feel small for asking a question.

You are not behind. You are becoming.

3. A Real Credential from an Accredited, SCHEV-Certified School

AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t self-awarded badges. They are recognized, third-party verifications that AVI meets rigorous standards for educational quality, student outcomes, and institutional integrity.

When you complete our ESL program, you receive a credential from a school that has been examined and approved by the state of Virginia and a national accrediting body. That matters — for your own confidence, for your next employer, and for the financial aid process.

This is not a diploma mill. This is the real thing.

4. ESL Is Your Bridge to a Beauty License — and a Career

AVI’s ESL program isn’t just offered alongside our beauty and wellness programs — it’s designed to feed directly into them. Many students enroll in ESL first, build their English proficiency, and then move into our programs in:

  • Cosmetology
  • Esthetics (Skin Care)
  • Nail Technology
  • Massage Therapy
  • Electrolysis
  • Cosmetic Laser Technology
  • A Virginia beauty license is a powerful credential. It allows you to work independently, earn tips and commissions, and — in time — own your own business. It doesn’t require a four-year American degree. It does require enough English proficiency to pass state board exams and communicate professionally with clients.

AVI’s ESL program closes that gap. Deliberately, efficiently, and in a supportive community.

    5. Financial Aid Is Available — Including for Immigrants

Many of our students are surprised to learn that financial aid may be available for their ESL and career training at AVI. We know that cost is one of the most significant barriers for immigrant families in Northern Virginia — and we take that seriously.

We will walk you through your options during enrollment. We will answer your questions honestly. And we will never pressure you into a commitment before you feel ready.

GI Bill® benefits are also accepted for qualifying veterans and their family members.

ESL Program Curriculum: What You’ll Learn in 300 Hours

Our 300-hour ESL program covers all four foundations of English language competency — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — while layering in the professional vocabulary and communication skills you’ll use every day in a beauty or wellness career.

    Core Language Skills

    Reading Comprehension
You will build the ability to read and understand product instructions, licensing exam study materials, workplace safety guidelines, client intake forms, and professional texts. Practical reading is at the center of everything.

    Writing Skills
From filling out job applications and client records to writing professional emails and responding to online reviews, professional writing in English opens doors. You’ll practice real formats that matter in the real world.

    Speaking & Pronunciation
This is where confidence is built. Through structured conversation practice, role-playing real client scenarios, and instructor-guided speaking exercises, you’ll develop the fluency and clarity to communicate professionally with clients, coworkers, and supervisors — in English, out loud, without freezing.

    Listening Comprehension
Understanding rapid, accented, or casual American English — in a salon, a school, a job interview — takes practice. Our listening curriculum helps you tune your ear to real-world English, not just textbook English.

    Grammar & Sentence Structure
You’ll build the grammatical foundation that makes everything else click — tenses, sentence structure, question forms, professional vocabulary — taught in context, not isolation.

    Professional & Industry Communication

AVI’s curriculum goes beyond standard ESL by weaving in the specific language of the beauty and wellness industry:

  • Client consultation language — asking questions, explaining services, describing products
  • Professional terminology — understanding and using the words you’ll see on state board exams and in the workplace
  • Workplace communication — speaking with managers, coworkers, and vendors
  • State board exam preparation — building the English literacy skills needed to pass Virginia’s cosmetology and esthetics licensing exams
  • Customer service English — handling complaints, giving directions, building rapport with clients
  • Hours Breakdown at a Glance

Career Outcomes: Where ESL at AVI Takes You

Completing AVI’s ESL program is step one of a career path, not an endpoint. Here is the trajectory our students follow — and why it works so well in Northern Virginia.

    Step 1: ESL → Step 2: Beauty License → Step 3: Career

The Northern Virginia and greater DC metro area is one of the most economically dynamic regions in the United States. Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Arlington consistently rank among the wealthiest counties in the country. That means demand for personal care services — hair, skin, nails, massage — is high, growing, and recession-resistant.

Licensed beauty professionals in Northern Virginia earn strong wages, receive tips on top of their hourly or commission income, and often have the ability to move toward booth rental or salon ownership — a path to self-employment that doesn’t require a business degree or corporate sponsorship.

Careers Our ESL Graduates Go On to Pursue

After completing ESL at AVI and earning their Virginia beauty or wellness license, our students go on to work as:

  • Licensed Cosmetologist — hair cutting, coloring, chemical services
  • Licensed Esthetician — facials, waxing, skin care treatments
  • Nail Technician — manicures, pedicures, nail enhancements
  • Massage Therapist — therapeutic and relaxation massage
  • Electrologist — permanent hair removal
  • Cosmetic Laser Technician — laser-based skin and hair treatments
  • Salon or Spa Owner — the ultimate goal for many of our students
  • The Northern Virginia Beauty Market Is Hiring

The DMV metro area is home to thousands of licensed salons, spas, medspas, and wellness centers — and that number grows every year. Communities across Northern Virginia — Reston, Herndon, Sterling, Manassas, Falls Church, McLean, Tysons, and Vienna itself — have strong demand for licensed, professional beauty services.

Bilingual beauty professionals are particularly in demand. If your first language is Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, or another language widely spoken in NoVA, your bilingualism is a professional asset — not a liability. Many clients specifically seek out service providers who share their language and cultural background.

The combination of an AVI career training credential and English proficiency is one of the most practical investments you can make in your future in this region.

Your Enrollment Path: From First Question to First Day of Class

We know that the enrollment process can feel confusing or even intimidating — especially if you’re navigating a new country, a new school system, or uncertainty about your options. We have designed AVI’s enrollment process to be as clear, simple, and supportive as possible.

Here is exactly what your path looks like.

Step 2 — Tour the School & Meet the Team

Come see us at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182. Walk through the classrooms. Meet an instructor. See where you’ll be learning. Many students tell us that visiting the school in person was the moment they knew AVI was right for them.

We want you to feel comfortable before you commit — not after.

Step 3 — Apply & Review Financial Aid Options

When you’re ready, submit your application. Our admissions team will walk you through the financial aid process, help you understand what documentation is needed, and make sure you have a clear picture of your investment and your options before you sign anything.

We are transparent about costs. We do not rush this step.

Step 4 — Enroll & Begin Your First Day

Once enrollment is complete, you’ll receive your schedule, your materials information, and everything you need to walk in on day one feeling prepared. Our instructors know that the first week can feel overwhelming — that’s normal, and they’re ready for it.

Step 5 — Complete ESL, Advance to Career Training

After 300 hours, you will have the English proficiency and confidence to advance into AVI’s cosmetology, esthetics, nail tech, massage therapy, or other programs — ready to tackle the coursework, the state board prep, and eventually, the licensing exam.

That license is the finish line. We will help you get there.

    Tuition & Financial Aid

We believe that cost should never be the reason a motivated person can’t access quality career training. AVI Career Training offers several ways to make your education financially manageable.

    Financial Aid May Be Available

AVI is accredited and SCHEV-certified, which means qualified students may be eligible for federal and state financial aid to help cover the cost of their training. Our admissions team will help you understand what options you may qualify for — with no pressure and no surprises.

Every student’s financial situation is different. We encourage you to reach out and have an honest conversation with us about what’s possible. Many students are surprised by the options available to them.

    GI Bill® Benefits Accepted

AVI Career Training is approved to accept GI Bill® education benefits for qualifying veterans and eligible dependents. If you have served in the United States Armed Forces, or if you are the spouse or child of someone who has, ask us about how these benefits can apply to your enrollment.

    Payment Plans & Options

We offer flexible payment options to help you manage your educational investment over time. Contact our admissions team to discuss what’s available and what works for your situation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need any English at all to enroll in the ESL program?

A: No. The ESL program exists precisely for students who are at or near the beginning of their English learning journey. You do not need to pass an English test to get started. Our instructors are trained to work with students at multiple levels of proficiency, and our small class sizes mean you’ll get individualized attention from day one. If you can communicate basic information — in any language — we can help you from there.

Q: What schedules are available? I work and have a family.

A: We understand that most of our students are working, raising families, and managing complex lives. Schedule flexibility is one of our priorities. Contact our admissions team to ask about current morning, evening, and weekend schedule availability. We will work with you to find an option that fits your life — not the other way around.

Q: How does the ESL program connect to the Virginia State Board licensing exam?

A: The Virginia Board of Cosmetology and Barbers and Board of Nursing licensing exams — which cover cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, massage therapy, and other fields — require students to read, comprehend, and respond to questions written in English. Our ESL curriculum specifically builds the reading comprehension, vocabulary, and test-taking language skills you need to approach those exams with confidence. ESL is not just about conversation — it is about giving you the language tools to pass the exam that unlocks your license.

Q: Will completing ESL at AVI guarantee I get into the cosmetology or esthetics program?

A: Completing our ESL program demonstrates your commitment, builds your English proficiency, and positions you well for enrollment in our career training programs. Our admissions team will work with you throughout your ESL enrollment to discuss your goals and plan your next step. There is no guarantee, but ESL completion at AVI is designed to be a direct pathway — not a dead end. We want to see you succeed in both programs.

Q: Is AVI a legitimate, accredited school? How do I know I can trust it?

A: These are fair and important questions — especially in an era when some for-profit schools have not served their students well. AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) — a nationally recognized accrediting body for career and technical schools — and certified by SCHEV, Virginia’s state agency for higher education oversight. These credentials are independently verified. We encourage you to look up both accrediting bodies and verify our status for yourself. Transparency is not something we fear — it’s something we invite.

Q: Can I bring someone with me who speaks my language when I visit?

A: Absolutely. Bring a family member, a friend, anyone who helps you feel comfortable. Our admissions team also includes multilingual staff, so let us know what languages you speak when you reach out and we’ll do our best to connect you with someone who can help. The goal of your first visit is simply for you to feel welcome and get your questions answered.
