Why Choose AVI for ESL — English as a Second Language?
There are plenty of places in Northern Virginia where you can take English classes. Community colleges. Tutoring centers. Apps on your phone. But AVI Career Training is the only school in the region where your ESL program is directly connected to a licensed beauty and wellness career — and the only place where the instructors, the community, and the curriculum are all pointing you toward the same destination: professional success.
Here’s what makes AVI different — and why it matters for you.
—
1. This Is English With a Purpose
Generic ESL programs teach vocabulary and grammar. AVI’s program teaches you those same foundational skills — reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and professional communication — in the context of a real career path.
You’ll learn how to communicate with clients, understand product instructions and safety labels, read licensing exam questions with confidence, and present yourself professionally in a salon, spa, or wellness setting. Every lesson connects to a life you’re actually building.
This is the difference between learning a language and learning a language for something.
—
2. COE Accreditation and SCHEV Certification — Legitimacy That Matters
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t participation trophies. They are rigorous, independently-verified credentials that mean:
When you graduate from AVI’s ESL program, you walk away with something that actually means something.
—
3. Instructors Who Have Been Where You Are
Our ESL instructors understand what it feels like to be a non-native English speaker navigating a new culture, a new career, and a new language — often all at the same time. You won’t be treated like a beginner who doesn’t belong. You’ll be treated like a professional who is in the process of becoming.
Small class sizes mean you get real attention — not a number in a lecture hall. Our instructors adapt to where you are, push you toward where you’re going, and celebrate every step forward.
—
4. A Classroom That Looks Like You
AVI’s student community represents dozens of languages, countries, and backgrounds — from Latin America and East Asia to the Middle East and West Africa. Northern Virginia is one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse regions in the United States, and our school reflects that.
You will not walk into AVI and feel out of place. You will walk in and find people who share your experience — and instructors who genuinely understand it. There is no shame in your classroom. There is only progress.
—
5. Financial Aid — Including the GI Bill®
Money should not be the reason you don’t move forward. AVI offers access to financial aid for eligible students, and we proudly accept the GI Bill® for qualifying veterans and service members. Our admissions team will walk you through every option available to you — so you can make a clear-eyed, informed decision without pressure.
—
ESL Program Curriculum — What You’ll Learn in 300 Hours

How Your 300 Hours Are Structured
Your program is designed to build progressively — from foundational language skills to professional-level communication and career-ready preparation.
Phase 1 — Foundation (Hours 1–75)
Core grammar, pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and listening comprehension. You’ll build confidence in simple conversations and begin reading English in structured contexts.
Phase 2 — Development (Hours 76–175)
Expanding vocabulary, writing skills, reading comprehension, and speaking fluency. You’ll begin practicing in real-world scenarios — customer conversations, product descriptions, workplace instructions.
Phase 3 — Application (Hours 176–250)
Professional communication in beauty and wellness contexts. Client consultations, safety protocols, state board exam language, workplace etiquette, and professional written communication.
Phase 4 — Integration & Preparation (Hours 251–300)
Career-readiness preparation. You’ll practice for licensing exam scenarios, simulate real workplace interactions, and finalize the language skills you need to thrive in a professional environment — whether you’re moving into cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, or massage therapy training.
—
A Note on Licensing Exam Readiness
For many of our students, the most immediate and concrete goal is passing the Virginia State Board licensing exams in their chosen beauty discipline. These exams are in English — and they are designed to assess your knowledge under pressure, in a language that may not be your first.
AVI’s ESL program directly addresses this challenge. You will practice reading exam-style questions, interpreting technical instructions, and expressing precise ideas clearly — so that when you sit for your licensing exam, the language is not a barrier. Your knowledge is what gets tested.

Career Outcomes — Where ESL at AVI Takes You
Learning English at AVI is not an end in itself. It is the beginning of something bigger.
The Northern Virginia and greater Washington DC metro area is one of the most economically vibrant regions in the country — and it has a massive, growing demand for licensed beauty and wellness professionals. When you complete AVI’s ESL program and go on to earn a professional license, you are entering a market that is ready for you.
—
Career Pathways Connected to Your ESL Program
Students who complete AVI’s ESL program are prepared to enroll in — and succeed in — any of our licensed vocational programs:
—
The Northern Virginia Opportunity
The DC metro region is home to thousands of salons, spas, med spas, wellness centers, and beauty businesses — many of them actively looking for licensed professionals. The region’s diversity also creates strong demand for beauty professionals who speak multiple languages and understand diverse beauty needs. Your background is not a limitation. It is a professional advantage.
Beauty licensing in Virginia opens the door to:
The beauty industry rewards skill, hustle, and connection with clients — and when your English is strong, every single one of those doors opens wider.
—
Financial Potential
While individual outcomes depend on many factors including experience, specialization, and business development, licensed beauty professionals in the Northern Virginia / DC market — one of the highest cost-of-living, highest-earning regions in the country — consistently earn competitive wages. Many salon professionals in this market build full-time incomes, and those who eventually rent their own suite or open a business significantly increase their earning potential over time.
Your ESL program is the first investment in that future.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need to already speak some English to enroll in AVI’s ESL program?
No. AVI’s ESL program is designed to meet students at their current level. You do not need to pass an English test or demonstrate a minimum level of proficiency before you enroll. Our instructors are experienced in working with students at a wide range of starting points — including true beginners. The program is structured to build skills progressively, so wherever you start, you’ll have the support you need to move forward.
—
2. How flexible is the schedule? I work full-time and have a family.
We understand that most of our students are balancing work, family, and other responsibilities. AVI’s scheduling is designed with working adults in mind. When you contact our admissions team, be upfront about your availability — morning, evening, weekend — and we’ll do our best to find a schedule that works for your life. Completing 300 hours is a significant commitment, but it is an achievable one. Many of our ESL students successfully complete the program while working and caring for their families.
—
3. Will completing this ESL program help me pass the Virginia State Board licensing exam?
Yes — that is one of the explicit goals of the program. Virginia’s cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, and other beauty licensing exams are conducted in English. AVI’s ESL curriculum directly prepares you for the language demands of those exams — including reading technical questions, interpreting instructions accurately, and responding with precision. If your goal is to become a licensed beauty professional in Virginia, this program is specifically designed to remove the language barrier that stands between you and that license.
—
4. What happens after I complete the ESL program? Can I enroll directly in a beauty program at AVI?
Yes. Completing AVI’s ESL program puts you in an excellent position to enroll in any of our licensed vocational programs — cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, massage therapy, electrolysis, or cosmetic laser technology. Many ESL students go on to complete a beauty program right here at AVI, benefiting from the relationships they’ve built with instructors and fellow students. Your admissions advisor can help you map out a complete timeline from ESL through licensing.
—
5. What if I’ve tried to learn English before and it didn’t work?
That’s actually one of the most common things we hear — and one of the most important. Apps, self-study, and generic language programs have very high dropout rates. Not because the students failed — but because those programs aren’t designed for real people with real lives and real goals. AVI’s ESL program is different because it gives you structure, accountability, human connection, and a clear destination. You’re not just learning English for its own sake. You’re learning it because there is a career — and a version of yourself — waiting on the other side. That changes everything.
