It’s 300 hours of career-focused language training designed to take you from where you are today to where you want to be — licensed, confident, and working professionally in the beauty industry.

Why Choose AVI for ESL — English as a Second Language?
There are plenty of places to learn English in Northern Virginia. Community colleges, private language schools, apps on your phone. But none of them teach you the English that will help you pass the Virginia cosmetology board exam. None of them introduce you to the vocabulary your future clients will use when they sit in your chair. And none of them give you a direct path to a licensed beauty career — all in the same building, with the same supportive community around you.
AVI does all of that. Here’s why our students choose us:
—
1. This Is Beauty English — Not Just Any English
Most ESL programs teach you how to talk about the weather, fill out forms, or order at a restaurant. That’s fine — but it won’t help you pass your Virginia State Board exam or explain a corrective color treatment to a client.
AVI’s ESL curriculum is built around the language of the beauty industry: professional vocabulary for salon consultations, the terminology on cosmetology and esthetics board exams, safety instructions, product labels, client intake forms, business communication, and the everyday conversations that happen in a professional salon environment.
Every lesson connects to something real — something you will actually use in your career. That’s not something NOVA’s general ESL track or any app can give you.
—
2. A Direct Path to Licensure — No Starting Over, No Transferring
When you complete your ESL program at AVI, you don’t have to go find a new school to continue your beauty education. You’re already here. AVI offers full career training programs in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, massage therapy, and more — and your ESL completion puts you exactly where you need to be to enroll.
This is a pipeline, not just a class. Many of our ESL students go on to complete a full licensure program at AVI and launch careers in the Northern Virginia beauty market. You’re not starting from zero — you’re building a foundation right where you’ll finish.
—
3. An Accredited School You Can Trust
AVI Career Training is COE Accredited (Council on Occupational Education) and SCHEV Certified (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia). We also accept the GI Bill® and offer financial aid to eligible students.
These aren’t small details. They mean AVI has met rigorous standards for educational quality, student support, and professional outcomes. When you enroll here, you’re investing in a real program at a real, recognized school — not a weekend workshop or a certificate from a company that won’t exist next year.
If you’ve ever worried about whether a school is legitimate before handing over your money and your time, these credentials are your answer.
—
4. A Community That Looks Like You
AVI is located in Vienna, Virginia — in the heart of one of the most culturally diverse corridors in the entire country. Our students come from across Northern Virginia: Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Annandale, Falls Church, and beyond. They speak Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Amharic, Tigrinya, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, and dozens of other languages.
You will not feel out of place here. You will not be the only person in the room who is working hard to communicate in English. Our community is your community — and our staff understands the courage it takes to sit in a classroom and learn in a language that isn’t your first.
There is no judgment here. There is only forward.
—
5. Small Class Sizes, Personal Support, Hands-On Learning
AVI is not a lecture hall. We are a career training school, which means everything we do is hands-on, practical, and personalized. Our ESL classes are small by design — so that instructors can work with you directly, answer your specific questions, and help you grow at a pace that actually sticks.
If you’ve ever been afraid of falling behind in a class, or felt too embarrassed to ask a question in front of a large group, AVI’s environment is different. We teach the way tradespeople learn: by doing, repeating, and building real confidence over time.
—
Program Curriculum — What You’ll Learn in 300 Hours
AVI’s ESL program is 300 hours of structured, progressive English instruction with a professional focus. Here’s what that looks like:
—
Core Language Skills
| Skill Area | What You’ll Practice |
|—|—|
| Reading | Understand written materials: textbooks, product labels, exam prep materials, salon menus, business communications |
| Writing | Complete professional forms, write client notes, draft basic business communications |
| Speaking | Hold confident conversations: client consultations, coworker communication, job interviews |
| Listening | Comprehend spoken English in fast-paced salon and classroom environments |
| Grammar | Build the sentence structure and grammar foundation needed for professional communication |
| Vocabulary | Master beauty industry terminology — the words on your board exam and in your daily work |
—
Professional Communication — Beauty Industry Focus
A significant portion of the curriculum is dedicated to professional communication in the beauty context, including:
—
Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
If your goal is to become a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, or nail technician in Virginia, you will need to pass a written board exam — in English. Many talented beauty professionals fail this exam not because they don’t know the material, but because the language of the questions is difficult to navigate without strong English comprehension.
AVI’s ESL curriculum directly addresses this. You’ll build the vocabulary and reading comprehension skills that make board exam questions readable and answerable. By the time you’re ready to enroll in a full licensure program and sit for your exam, the language won’t be the thing standing between you and your license.
—
A Structured 300-Hour Journey
The program is structured to build progressively — beginning with foundational English skills and moving toward professional application. You’ll finish with the language confidence to enter a cosmetology, esthetics, or nail technology program and succeed.
300 hours. Real skills. A clear next step.
—
Career Outcomes — Where This Program Takes You
ESL is the first step. Here’s where that step leads.
—
The Economics of English Proficiency in Beauty
Language barriers don’t just affect your confidence — they affect your income. In Northern Virginia’s beauty industry, licensed professionals with strong client communication skills earn meaningfully more than unlicensed assistants or those limited to serving only within their native language community.
Consider the difference:
The path from where you are now to any of those outcomes starts here — with the language.
—
Job Titles You Can Pursue After Completing Your Full Beauty Licensure
(Following ESL completion and enrollment in a full licensure program)
—
Northern Virginia’s Beauty Market Is One of the Strongest in the Nation
The DC metro area — including Fairfax County, Arlington, and Alexandria — consistently ranks among the highest-paying markets for beauty professionals in the United States. The region’s size, diversity, wealth, and density of salons, spas, and wellness businesses create steady, growing demand for licensed beauty professionals who can serve its multicultural population.
This is one of the best places in the country to build a beauty career. And AVI Career Training is right in the middle of it.
—
What Our Students Go On to Do
AVI ESL students go on to enroll in our cosmetology, esthetics, and nail technology programs. They graduate. They pass their board exams. They get hired. They open businesses. They build careers that support their families and give them independence that working for minimum wage never could.
That journey starts with 300 hours of the right English.

Frequently Asked Questions
—
1. Do I need to already speak some English to enroll in the ESL program?
No — and that’s the point. This program is designed to meet you where you are. Whether you are an absolute beginner or you have some conversational English but struggle with reading, writing, or professional vocabulary, AVI’s ESL curriculum is built to support learners at multiple starting points. Our instructors know how to work with students at different levels, and our small class sizes mean you’ll get individual attention rather than being lost in a crowd. You do not need to be fluent — or even close — to get started.
—
2. I work and have children. Can I fit this program into my schedule?
We understand that most of our students are not sitting at home with unlimited free time. Many are working, many are raising families, and many are managing both at once. That’s not a reason you can’t pursue this — it’s the reason you should. Contact our admissions team to discuss current schedule options. We’ll be honest with you about what’s available and help you figure out whether the timing works. Your life doesn’t have to stop for you to move forward.
—
3. How does the ESL program connect to the Virginia cosmetology or esthetics board exam?
Directly. The Virginia State Board written exam — whether for cosmetology, esthetics, or nail technology — is administered in English, and the language of the questions can be difficult to navigate if you’re not comfortable with professional and technical English. AVI’s ESL curriculum specifically builds the reading comprehension and vocabulary skills you’ll need to understand and answer board exam questions confidently. You’ll learn the terminology that appears in your licensure program textbooks and on the exam itself. ESL isn’t just “learning English” — at AVI, it’s board exam prep in disguise.
—
4. What makes AVI’s ESL program different from ESL classes at NOVA or a language school?
Great question — and an important one. NOVA’s ESL program is broad and general. It teaches English as a life skill, and it does that reasonably well for some people. But it has nothing to do with the beauty industry, nothing to do with licensing, and nothing to do with the specific vocabulary or communication skills you’ll need to work in a salon or spa. Private language schools are often the same — language-only, with no career context and no pipeline to anything beyond the classroom.
AVI’s ESL program is industry-specific, career-connected, and housed inside a beauty school. When you finish, you don’t transfer somewhere else. You stay here and enroll in the program that leads directly to your license. That’s a completely different kind of investment.
—
5. What kind of support will I have if I’m struggling?
We want to be clear about this: AVI is not a place where you will be left to figure things out alone. Our class sizes are small specifically so that instructors can give meaningful individual attention. If you’re struggling with a concept, a vocabulary area, or the material in general, there are people here whose job is to help you work through it. Beyond the classroom, our staff understands the challenges our students face — many of them come from similar communities and backgrounds. You are not just a student number here. You are a person with a goal, and we are invested in helping you reach it.
—
6. How much does the ESL program cost, and is financial aid really available?
Cost is one of the first things most people ask about — and a fair one. We don’t list a single price here because your actual cost depends on factors like financial aid eligibility, veteran benefits, and available payment plans. What we can tell you plainly: financial aid is available to eligible students, we accept the GI Bill®, and our admissions team will walk you through every option without pressure. Call or text (703) 943-9841 or use the contact form below and we’ll give you a straight answer about what enrollment will actually cost you.

Apply Today — Your Career in Beauty Starts With This Step
You’ve been working hard. You’ve been waiting for the right moment. You’ve been telling yourself that maybe when your English gets a little better, or when the timing is right, or when you have a little more money saved — then you’ll do something about your career.
Here’s what we want you to hear: The timing will never be perfect. But the opportunity is in front of you right now.
AVI’s ESL program exists because we believe that language should open doors, not close them. We believe that the immigrant women and men in Northern Virginia who are doing beauty work every day — who have talent, ambition, and drive — deserve a school that meets them where they are and takes them where they want to go.
You don’t have to have perfect English to start.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You just have to take the next step.
