Why Choose AVI Career Training for Barbering?

There are choices out there. Here’s why students who are serious about barbering as a career choose AVI.

1. Accreditation That Means Your License Is Real

AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). That’s not fine print — it’s your guarantee that the training you receive meets rigorous educational standards, that your hours count toward Virginia licensure, and that your credential is respected by every employer, booth rental studio, and loan officer in the business.

Not every school advertising barber training in Northern Virginia carries both designations. Ours does. Before you enroll anywhere, ask to see their accreditation documentation. We’ll show you ours on day one.

2. Hands-On Training from Day One — Not Just Lecture Halls

Barbering is a physical skill. You learn it with your hands, not from a slide deck. AVI’s program is built around live clinic hours where you work on real clients under instructor supervision from early in your training. You’ll graduate having performed hundreds of actual haircuts, shaves, and beard services — not just having watched them on video.

Our clinic environment replicates what you’ll find in a professional setting: real equipment, real service flow, real tipping culture, and real expectations. When you sit for your Virginia state board exam — and when you walk into your first job — nothing will feel unfamiliar.

3. A Program Designed for Northern Virginia’s Market

General barbering statistics from national surveys don’t tell you much about what’s happening in Tysons, Fairfax, McLean, or the broader DC Metro corridor. AVI is embedded in this market. Our instructors work in it. Our graduates are in it. We understand what Northern Virginia clients expect, what premium shops in this market are looking for when they hire, and what it takes to succeed here — not in some hypothetical average American city.

The Northern Virginia and DC metro barbering market is one of the strongest in the country, driven by a dense, professional, and diverse population that values quality grooming and pays accordingly. You’re training in exactly the right place.

4. A Real Path for Veterans

AVI Career Training is approved to accept the GI Bill®. If you’re separating from the military and looking for a skilled trade that translates directly to civilian employment or self-employment, barbering is one of the most direct paths available. The training timeline is defined and finite. The skill is portable. The demand is recession-resistant. And your benefits can cover a meaningful portion of the cost.

We work regularly with veteran students and understand the unique challenges of transitioning from military service to civilian career training. You will not be treated like just another enrollment number here.

5. Financial Aid That Removes the Barrier to Starting

Thinking “I can’t afford school right now” is one of the most common reasons people delay a career change they know they should make. AVI offers financial aid options for students who qualify, including federal aid programs. Our admissions team will walk you through the process step by step — no confusing jargon, no pressure, just a clear picture of what starting actually costs you.

The price of waiting is usually higher than the price of enrolling.

What You’ll Learn: The AVI Barbering Curriculum

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of supervised instruction and practical training to sit for the State Board of Barbers and Cosmetology licensing examination. AVI’s curriculum is built to fulfill that requirement while genuinely preparing you to work at the level Northern Virginia clients expect.

Core Technical Skills

Haircutting & Styling
The foundation of every barber’s career. You’ll develop precision technique across every cutting method — scissors over comb, clipper work, freehand razor technique — and build the pattern recognition to execute any cut a client walks in requesting.

  • Clipper fades (low, mid, and high)
  • Taper cuts and blending techniques
  • Scissor cuts and textured finishes
  • Flat tops, Afros, and natural hair shaping
  • Men’s styling and finishing products
  • Beard & Mustache Services
Beard grooming has evolved into one of the highest-margin services a barber can offer. You’ll learn:

  • Beard shaping and outline design
  • Mustache trimming and detailing
  • Full beard sculpting from growth stage to finished look
  • Neck and cheek line precision
  • Hot Towel Shaves & Straight Razor Technique
The straight razor shave is the signature service that separates a barber from a hair cutter. You’ll master:

  • Straight razor handling and honing
  • Hot towel application and skin prep
  • Traditional shaving technique
  • Skin type assessment and product selection
  • Post-shave finishing
  • Hair & Scalp Care
Clients trust their barber with their scalp health, not just their style. Your curriculum includes:

  • Scalp analysis and common conditions
  • Shampooing and conditioning protocols
  • Treatment applications
  • Chemical services relevant to barbering
  • Business & Professional Skills
This is one area where many barber programs fall short. AVI recognizes that most barbers will eventually want to go independent — and we train you for that.

  • Client consultation and communication
  • Booking, scheduling, and client retention basics
  • Booth rental vs. employment models
  • Professional standards and barbershop etiquette
  • Infection control, sanitation, and Virginia state regulations
  • Virginia State Board Examination Preparation

Before you graduate, you will be fully prepared to pass the Virginia State Board of Barbers and Cosmetology licensing examination, which includes both a written theory component and a practical skills demonstration.

AVI integrates state board prep throughout the program — not just in the final weeks. You’ll regularly practice the specific techniques tested on the practical exam, work through theory content, and take practice assessments so that exam day feels like familiar territory.

  • Complete a Virginia-approved 1,500-hour barbering program ✓ (AVI is approved)
  • Pass the written theory examination
  • Pass the practical skills examination
  • Pay the Virginia state licensing fee
  • Maintain your license through continuing education every two years
  • Career Outcomes: What a Virginia Barber License Is Worth

Let’s talk about what you’re actually building toward.

Job Titles Available to Licensed Barbers

  • Staff Barber (barbershop employee or chain location)
  • Booth Renter / Independent Barber
  • Master Barber / Senior Stylist
  • Shop Manager
  • Barbershop Owner / Entrepreneur
  • Platform Artist or Brand Educator
  • Educator / Barber School Instructor (with additional hours and experience)
  • Earning Potential in Northern Virginia

Northern Virginia and the DC Metro region consistently rank among the highest-paying markets for barbers and personal appearance workers in the United States, driven by high population density, strong disposable income, and a professional workforce that prioritizes grooming.

What licensed barbers earn in this market:

  • Entry-level / first 1–2 years: Build your book, develop speed, establish clientele — this is your investment phase
  • Established barber with clientele: Income reflects hours worked and service quality; skilled barbers with loyal books in this market earn $50,000–$70,000+
  • Booth rental / independent: Your income scales directly with your business skills; top earners in the DMV area exceed $80,000–$100,000+
  • Shop owners: Income potential is limited only by location, staffing, and execution
  • The math that makes barbering work:

Consider a barber working a standard week in Northern Virginia. At premium service rates typical of the Tysons-Vienna corridor, a barber who maintains a steady appointment book — even at mid-market pricing — can generate meaningful annual income. Add beard services, hot towel shaves, and retail product sales, and the numbers grow quickly.

Haircuts don’t go out of style. They don’t get disrupted by apps. They don’t get outsourced. A licensed barber with strong technical skills and people skills in this market has genuine job security that desk workers often envy.

    The Local Market Advantage

Northern Virginia is an exceptional market to launch a barbering career:

  • Dense, affluent, professional population in Fairfax County, Arlington, and Loudoun County
  • Military presence at the Pentagon, Fort Belvoir, and Joint Base Andrews — a reliable clientele demographic
  • Rapid residential growth in the Dulles Corridor, Reston, Herndon, and surrounding communities
  • DC Metro proximity — access to one of the nation’s top grooming markets without DC-level overhead costs
  • Diverse, international clientele requiring skill across all hair textures — a differentiation advantage for AVI graduates trained to work on every client
  • Your Path from Student to Licensed Barber

We make the process straightforward. Here’s how students move from first inquiry to licensed career.

    Step 1: Explore

Start with a conversation. Contact our admissions team at (703) 943-9841 or submit an inquiry through our online form. Ask every question you have — about the program, the schedule, the costs, what a typical day looks like, what graduates are doing now. There is no such thing as a dumb question here, and there is no high-pressure sales environment at AVI.

    Step 2: Apply

The application process is straightforward and accessible. Apply online here — it takes about five minutes to get started. Our team will reach out to confirm your information, discuss your goals, and walk you through the next steps.

    Basic admissions requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age or older (16–17 with parental consent and additional documentation)
  • Completed application
  • Meet financial aid or payment requirements
  • Step 3: Enroll

Once your application is reviewed and financial arrangements are confirmed, you’ll complete your enrollment paperwork and receive your start date, supply list, and orientation information. Our admissions team handles the financial aid paperwork with you — you don’t navigate that process alone.

    Step 4: Train

1,500 hours of hands-on, structured training. Real clients. Real feedback. Real skill development. This is where the work happens — and where most students say they discover capabilities they didn’t know they had. You’ll work in AVI’s clinic, develop your technical foundation, build your professional identity, and prepare for state board.

Step 5: Graduate & Get Licensed

Upon completing your 1,500 hours and satisfying program requirements, AVI will certify your completion to the Virginia Board of Barbers and Cosmetology. You’ll then sit for the Virginia licensing examination. Our graduates go into that exam prepared — not anxious.

After passing, you hold a Virginia Barber License — a state-issued professional credential that is portable across reciprocity states and recognized by every employer in the industry.

    Welcome to the profession.

    Tuition & Financial Aid

We believe cost should never be the reason someone doesn’t get the training they need to build a better career.

    Financial Aid for Eligible Students

AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs for students who qualify. Depending on your financial situation, aid may cover a significant portion of your tuition — in some cases, more than you expect.

To find out what you qualify for:
    1. Complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov
    2. Contact our financial aid team — we’ll walk you through your options
    3. Make an informed decision based on real numbers, not assumptions

    GI Bill® and Military Benefits

AVI is approved to accept the GI Bill®. Veterans, active-duty service members using tuition assistance, and eligible dependents should contact our admissions team early in the inquiry process so we can ensure your benefits are applied correctly. We have experience working with the VA education benefits process and will help you navigate it.

    Eligible programs may include:

  • Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)
  • Montgomery GI Bill® (Chapter 30)
  • Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)
  • GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. More information is available at benefits.va.gov/gibill.

    Payment Options

For students who do not qualify for financial aid or choose not to use it, we offer payment plan arrangements. Contact our admissions team to discuss the full range of options available to you.

Bottom line: Before you assume you can’t afford this, have the conversation. The actual out-of-pocket cost is often very different from the sticker price once aid is factored in.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior barbering experience to enroll?

No prior experience is required or expected. AVI’s Barbering program is designed to take students from complete beginner to licensed professional. Our instructors have trained students at every starting point — you do not need to already know how to cut hair to enroll. What you need is motivation to learn and the work ethic to put in the hours. The skill is teachable. We’ve seen it hundreds of times.

How long does it take to complete the 1,500-hour program?

Program duration depends on your schedule. Contact our admissions team at (703) 943-9841 for current schedule options and an estimated timeline based on how you plan to attend. We’ll give you a straight answer based on your specific situation.

What does the Virginia barber licensing exam actually look like?

The Virginia State Board of Barbers and Cosmetology licensing examination has two components:

  • Written/Theory Exam: Covers the science of barbering — anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, infection control, and Virginia state law and regulations. This is a computer-based, multiple-choice examination administered at a state-approved testing center.
  • Practical/Skills Exam: A hands-on demonstration of core barbering services performed on a live model, evaluated by a state board examiner. Common practical exam components include haircutting, shaving, and sanitation procedures.
  • AVI prepares you for both. State board prep isn’t a last-minute add-on in our program — it’s woven into training throughout your 1,500 hours.

Is the AVI barbering program eligible for financial aid and the GI Bill®?

Yes to both. AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs for qualifying students, and we are approved to accept the GI Bill®. Contact our admissions team to begin the process — the earlier you start, the smoother the financial arrangement goes. Do not assume you don’t qualify before you’ve had the conversation.

What kind of career support does AVI provide after graduation?

AVI’s investment in you doesn’t end when you complete your hours. We provide career guidance and professional development support to help you move from licensed graduate to working barber. Our instructors and staff are embedded in the Northern Virginia beauty and grooming industry and can provide real-world perspective on your next steps — whether that’s employment at an established shop, booth rental, or building toward your own business. Ask our admissions team about specific graduate support resources when you speak with us.

I’m a career changer in my 30s or 40s. Is it too late to start?

It is not too late. It is, in fact, an excellent time to start. Career changers in their 30s and 40s bring significant advantages to barbering: professional communication skills, emotional maturity, client relationship management, and often, a clearer sense of purpose than a 19-year-old enrolling right out of high school. Many of the most successful barbers in the Northern Virginia market made lateral moves from unrelated careers. The licensing path is identical regardless of age. The finish line is 1,500 hours away. The question isn’t whether you’re too old — it’s whether you want to spend the next few years doing something you actually care about.

Ready to Start? Apply to AVI’s Barbering Program Today.

You’ve done the research. You know what you want. The only thing between you and a licensed barbering career in Northern Virginia is getting started.

The only wrong move is waiting another year.
