Why Choose AVI Career Training for Cosmetology?
There are other beauty schools in the DC metro area. Here’s why students who do their research keep choosing AVI.
—
1. Accreditation That Protects Your Investment
AVI Career Training is COE (Council on Occupational Education) accredited and SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) certified. These aren’t just letters on a wall — they mean your training meets rigorous national and state standards, your credits are recognized by employers and licensing boards, and your financial aid eligibility is protected.
Before you enroll anywhere, ask to see their accreditation status. Ours is current, verifiable, and meaningful.
—
2. Hands-On Training From Day One — Not Just Lectures
At AVI, you don’t spend months sitting in a classroom before you’re allowed to touch a client. Our curriculum is structured so students begin developing real technique early, progressing from foundational skills to live-client clinic work in our on-site salon environment.
By the time you sit for your Virginia State Board exam, you won’t just know the theory — you’ll have the practiced, muscle-memory confidence that comes from doing the work hundreds of times.
—
3. Intimate Class Sizes. Instructors Who Know Your Name.
The difference between a great cosmetology education and an average one often comes down to one thing: how much individual attention you receive. At AVI, you’re not a student ID number enrolled in a corporate franchise. You’re a person building a career, and our instructors are invested in your progress.
Small class sizes mean more feedback, more correction, more mentorship — and better outcomes on your licensing exam and in your first job.
—
4. Inclusive Training for Every Client You’ll Ever Meet
The beauty industry serves everyone. Your training should reflect that. AVI’s cosmetology curriculum prepares you to work beautifully on all hair types, all textures, and all skin tones — because your future clients will be as diverse as Northern Virginia itself.
This isn’t just the right approach. It’s what makes graduates more employable, more versatile, and more capable of building a loyal, diverse clientele.
—
5. Located in the Heart of Northern Virginia
AVI sits at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 — minutes from Tysons, Reston, McLean, Falls Church, and Fairfax. If you live or work anywhere in the NOVA/DC corridor, you’re closer to your new career than you might think.
—
Cosmetology Program Curriculum — What You’ll Learn
Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of cosmetology training to sit for the state licensing exam. At AVI, every one of those hours is designed to build competence you can use on your first day of work.

Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
Your AVI program doesn’t end until you’re ready for exam day — not just on paper, but in practice. Our curriculum is built around the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing requirements, and your training will include structured preparation for both the written (theory) examination and the practical (skills) examination administered through PSI Testing.
Completing 1,500 hours at an approved school like AVI is the required first step. After graduation, you’ll apply to the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and schedule your exams with PSI.

Career Outcomes — What Can You Do With a Virginia Cosmetology License?
A Virginia cosmetology license is a portable, professional credential. Here’s where it can take you.

Job Titles & Career Paths
—
Earning Potential in Virginia
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in Virginia earn a median annual wage of approximately $32,000–$40,000, with experienced stylists, colorists, and salon owners earning significantly more. In the high-income Northern Virginia market — one of the wealthiest metro regions in the country — client spending on beauty services is consistently strong, and tipping culture meaningfully increases take-home pay beyond base wages.
Booth renters and salon owners who build loyal clientele often exceed these medians substantially. Cosmetology is one of the few licensed trades where your income is largely determined by your skill, your hustle, and your relationships — not a salary cap someone else set for you.
—
The Northern Virginia Advantage
You’re training in one of the most economically robust regions in the United States. The NOVA/DC metro area is home to thousands of salons, spas, and beauty businesses serving a dense, affluent, and diverse population. Demand for skilled, licensed cosmetologists here is real — and persistent.
—
Your Path From Enrollment to Licensed Cosmetologist
Getting your Virginia cosmetology license through AVI is a clear, step-by-step process. Here’s how it works.
—
Step 1: Connect With Our Admissions Team
Start with a conversation — no pressure, no commitment. Ask us anything: about the schedule, the curriculum, what financial aid looks like for your situation, what a day at AVI actually feels like. We’ll give you honest answers.

—
Step 2: Complete Your Application & Enrollment
When you’re ready, your AVI admissions advisor will walk you through the application, any enrollment documentation, and your financial aid options — including whether you qualify for federal financial aid or GI Bill® benefits. We make this part as straightforward as possible because paperwork shouldn’t be the thing standing between you and your career.
—
Step 3: Begin Your 1,500-Hour Program
Show up ready to work. From foundational technique to live-client clinic hours, every class session is building toward licensure — and toward the career you actually want. Most students complete the program in approximately 12 to 14 months, depending on schedule.
—
Step 4: Graduate & Sit for Your Virginia State Board Exams
After completing your 1,500 hours, you’ll apply to DPOR and schedule your written and practical exams through PSI Testing. Your AVI training is your preparation. We build the curriculum around what the exam tests and what salons actually need.
—
Step 5: Get Licensed. Get to Work.
Once you pass your Virginia State Board exams, you’ll receive your cosmetology license from the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. At that point, you’re a licensed professional — eligible to work in any Virginia salon, rent a booth, or begin building toward ownership.
—
Tuition & Financial Aid — Making It Actually Possible
We believe the cost of training shouldn’t be what stands between someone with real talent and a career they love. Here’s what you should know.
—
Financial Aid Is Available
AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs. Eligible students may be able to cover a significant portion — or all — of their tuition costs through aid, grants, or loans. Financial aid eligibility is determined individually, and our admissions team will walk you through the process of understanding what you qualify for.
Not sure where to start? Ask us. There’s no obligation in finding out what’s available to you.
—
GI Bill® Benefits Accepted
If you’re a veteran, active-duty servicemember, or military spouse in the Northern Virginia area, AVI accepts GI Bill® education benefits. The NOVA/DC corridor has one of the largest military-connected populations in the country, and we’ve made sure our program is accessible to the men and women who’ve served.
GI Bill® is a registered trademark of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). More information about education benefits offered by VA is available at the official U.S. government website at https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill.

Compare the Investment
Before you decide cosmetology school “costs too much,” consider the alternative:
| | AVI Cosmetology Program | Typical 4-Year College Degree |
|—|—|—|
| Time to credential | ~12–14 months | 4 years |
| Starting career | After 1,500 hours | After 4 years + job search |
| Type of credential | State license (mandatory for practice) | Degree (no guarantee of employment) |
| Financial aid available | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| End result | Licensed professional ready to earn | Varies widely |
The cosmetology license is a mandatory professional credential — every practicing cosmetologist in Virginia must have one. That means your training has built-in, legally recognized value from day one.
—
Payment Options
In addition to financial aid, AVI offers payment options to help make enrollment manageable. Your admissions advisor will walk you through what’s available and help you find a plan that works for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
—
Do I need any prior experience to enroll in AVI’s cosmetology program?
No. AVI’s cosmetology program is designed for students who are starting from zero. Whether you’ve never held a pair of shears or you’ve been doing family and friends’ hair for years, we meet you where you are and build your skills systematically from the ground up. The only things you need to bring are commitment and a genuine interest in the craft.
—
How long does it take to complete the program? Do you offer flexible schedules?
Virginia’s cosmetology license requires 1,500 clock hours of approved training. At AVI, most students complete the program in approximately 12 to 14 months. We understand that many of our students have jobs, families, and obligations outside of school — contact our admissions team to discuss current schedule options and find out what works for your situation.
—
What happens after I finish my hours? How do I get my Virginia cosmetology license?
After completing your 1,500 hours at AVI, you’ll apply to the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) and schedule your licensing exams through PSI Testing. Virginia requires both a written examination (covering theory, science, and regulations) and a practical examination (demonstrating hands-on skills). Your AVI training is structured specifically to prepare you for both. Once you pass, DPOR issues your license — and you’re ready to work.
—
Does AVI help with job placement after graduation?
AVI prepares you to be a competitive, job-ready professional. Our training is practical and employment-focused — by graduation, you’ll have real client experience, a complete set of professional skills, and state board preparation behind you. We encourage you to connect with our admissions and student support team to learn more about the resources and guidance available to graduates navigating the NOVA job market.
—
I’m a veteran or military spouse. Can I use my GI Bill® benefits at AVI?
Yes. AVI Career Training accepts GI Bill® education benefits. If you’re a veteran or military-connected individual in the Northern Virginia area, we want to make sure you’re using every benefit you’ve earned. Contact our admissions team — we’ll help you understand how your benefits apply to the cosmetology program and what the enrollment process looks like for VA-funded students.
—
I’m worried I’m too old to start something new. Is cosmetology realistic for a career changer in their 30s or 40s?
Completely realistic — and frankly, some of the most successful cosmetologists are people who came to the profession after spending years in a job that never quite fit. You bring life experience, professional discipline, communication skills, and real motivation that younger students are still developing. The cosmetology industry values talent, consistency, and the ability to build relationships with clients. None of those things have an age limit. If this is what you want to do, your age is not the obstacle you’re afraid it is.
