Why Choose AVI Career Training for Your ESL Education?
There are general ESL programs in Northern Virginia. There are cosmetology schools too. But AVI is one of the only places in the region where these two things come together — intentionally, structurally, and with genuine respect for who you are and what you’ve already accomplished.
Here’s what makes our program different from everything else you’ll find.
—
1. English Taught Through the Language of Beauty
Most ESL programs teach you English for life in general. Our program teaches you English for your specific career in beauty and wellness. That means the vocabulary, phrases, client conversations, product terminology, and professional communication skills you’ll need from your very first day working in a salon or spa.
You won’t spend weeks learning words you’ll never use. You’ll spend your time learning exactly what your clients, employers, and licensing examiners will expect from you — because that’s what actually moves your life forward.
—
2. A School That Understands Your Community
AVI Career Training sits in the heart of Northern Virginia’s most diverse corridor — Vienna, Falls Church, Herndon, Reston, Annandale, Centreville, Sterling. Our students speak Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Amharic, Arabic, Tagalog, and more. This is not a school where you will be the only person who looks like you, sounds like you, or has lived a life like yours.
We are not a large national chain with a polished brochure and a one-size-fits-all approach. We are a community school that knows your name, respects your pace, and is genuinely invested in your success.
—
3. COE Accreditation — Your Protection and Your Proof
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These are not decorative logos. They mean:
If you have ever worried about whether a school is “real” — this is your answer. AVI is as legitimate as it gets.
—
4. Instructors Who Slow Down When You Need Them To
Our instructors understand that language acquisition takes time — and that intelligence and comprehension are not the same thing. You may already be an experienced professional in your home country. You may have skills our English-only students don’t have yet. Our teachers know that.
At AVI, you will never be made to feel embarrassed for asking a question. You will never be left behind because an instructor moved too fast. Our small class environment means real attention, real feedback, and real patience — not a lecture hall where you’re a number.
—
5. A Clear Pathway from ESL Support to Virginia Licensure and Employment
We don’t just teach you English and send you out the door. AVI is a full-service career training school. Once you build your English foundation through our ESL program, you have a clear, supported pathway into our cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, massage therapy, and other beauty programs — each designed to help you earn your Virginia state license and enter the workforce with confidence.
Your ESL coursework here isn’t a detour. It’s the first step on a single, connected road to a career you own.

ESL Program Curriculum — What You Will Learn in 300 Hours
Our ESL program is 300 hours of structured, career-focused English language instruction. Every hour is designed to move you closer to professional fluency in the settings that matter for a career in beauty and wellness.

Core Skill Areas
Reading
Learn to read product labels, licensing exam questions, professional publications, client intake forms, and industry regulations. Reading fluency is essential for passing your Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam — and we prepare you for exactly that.
Writing
Develop writing skills for professional settings: completing client records, writing appointment notes, sending professional messages, and navigating workplace documentation. Clear writing builds trust with employers and clients alike.
Speaking
This is where many students make the greatest transformation. You will practice real conversations — greeting clients, recommending services, handling complaints gracefully, communicating with coworkers and managers. You will practice until confidence becomes natural, not forced.
Listening
Learn to understand spoken English in professional environments: fast speech, different accents, instructions from supervisors, and client requests delivered quickly. Active listening is one of the most underrated career skills in the beauty industry.
Grammar
Build the grammatical foundation that makes your spoken and written English clear and credible. We focus on grammar patterns that appear most frequently in professional communication — not obscure rules that only matter in academic writing.
Vocabulary
Develop a working vocabulary that includes:
Professional Communication
Tie everything together in scenario-based practice: mock client consultations, role-played workplace situations, phone and text professional communication, and customer service language that helps you earn tips, referrals, and repeat business.

Virginia State Board Exam Preparation — Built In, Not Bolted On
One of the greatest anxieties for non-native English speakers is the licensing exam. The written portion of the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam is administered in English. Our ESL curriculum specifically addresses this.
You will practice reading the types of questions the board exam uses. You will learn the vocabulary that appears most frequently on the written test. You will understand how to interpret exam phrasing — because sometimes the challenge isn’t the content knowledge, it’s the way a question is worded.
This is one of the most meaningful things we do for our ESL students. We remove the language barrier between your skills and your license.
—
Career Outcomes — Where This Program Takes You
Our ESL program is not a standalone credential. It is the foundation for a licensed, stable, financially rewarding career in the beauty and wellness industry — one of the most immigrant-friendly, entrepreneurship-accessible industries in the United States.
—
Industries and Job Titles Where AVI Graduates Work
After completing ESL training and advancing through AVI’s career programs, graduates pursue roles including:
—
The Northern Virginia Beauty Market Is One of the Best in the Country
The DC metro area — including Northern Virginia — is one of the highest-paying markets for licensed beauty professionals in the United States. The combination of high household incomes, a dense and diverse population, and strong demand for multicultural beauty services creates exceptional opportunity for bilingual beauty professionals.
Bilingual professionals in particular carry a distinct competitive advantage. A cosmetologist who speaks Spanish, Korean, or Amharic fluently can serve entire client communities that English-only stylists cannot. Your language background is not a liability in this industry. It is a business asset.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the beauty and personal care industry continues to grow, with consistent demand across skin care, hair care, and nail services — especially in diverse metropolitan areas like Northern Virginia.
—
More Than a Job — A Business You Can Own
Many AVI graduates go on to rent their own salon suite, build a loyal client base, and run their own small business within years of graduation. In the beauty industry, once you are licensed, your income potential is tied to your skills and your relationships — not to whether your English is “perfect.” Your chair. Your clients. Your business.

Frequently Asked Questions
—
Do I need to already speak some English to enroll in the ESL program?
No. Our ESL program is designed to meet students where they are. Whether you are a true beginner or an intermediate speaker who needs to build professional fluency, there is a place for you here. We conduct an informal assessment during your enrollment conversation — not to exclude you, but to understand your starting point so we can support you most effectively. You do not need to be “good enough” to start. That is the point of the program.
—
How flexible is the schedule? I work and I have children.
We understand that most of our students are managing significant responsibilities outside of school. Our admissions team will work with you to identify a schedule that fits your life. We encourage you to tell us exactly what your constraints are — mornings, evenings, weekday limitations, childcare considerations — so we can explore realistic options together. Our goal is a schedule you can actually keep, not one that forces you to choose between your education and your family.
—
Will my English be good enough to pass the Virginia state licensing exam after completing this program?
That is exactly what this program is designed to prepare you for. The Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology written exam is administered in English, and language comprehension is one of the most significant challenges non-native speakers face when preparing for it. Our ESL curriculum includes specific preparation for the vocabulary, phrasing, and question formats used on the board exam. Completing our ESL program will meaningfully improve your readiness for the written licensing exam — and we will be with you through that preparation every step of the way.
—
I have a cosmetology or beauty license from my home country. Do I still need to go through training here?
Virginia does not automatically recognize foreign cosmetology licenses or training credentials. To work legally as a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician, nail technician, or other beauty professional in Virginia, you must meet the state’s hour requirements and pass the Virginia board exam. Our ESL program — followed by one of AVI’s career training programs — provides you with the documented, accredited hours Virginia requires and the preparation to pass your exam. Your existing skills and experience are a tremendous advantage that will accelerate your learning. You are not starting from zero — you are adapting your expertise for the U.S. market.
—
Does AVI help graduates find jobs after completing the program?
Yes. AVI Career Training provides career services support to help graduates transition into employment. Our location in Northern Virginia — one of the most active beauty markets in the country — means we have connections to salons, spas, and wellness businesses in the communities where our students live and want to work. We also recognize that bilingual graduates carry a real competitive advantage in this market, and we help you understand how to communicate that value to potential employers. Your graduation is the beginning of a career, not the end of our relationship.

You have spent time learning about this program. You have read about the curriculum, the career outcomes, the financial aid options, and the community you would be joining. Now there is only one question left.
What is waiting on the other side of this decision?

None of that requires perfect English today. It only requires that you take the first step today.
