Why Choose AVI for Your Esthetics Training?

There are other esthetics programs in Northern Virginia. Here’s why serious students choose AVI — and why it matters for your career.

1. Accreditation That Actually Protects You

AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t just letters on a wall.

COE accreditation means:

  • Your program meets rigorous academic and professional standards
  • Your federal financial aid eligibility is protected
  • Your credential is recognized by employers, licensing boards, and — if you ever move — by cosmetology boards in other states
  • You’re not attending a diploma mill
  • When you graduate from AVI, your certificate means something. That matters when you’re walking into a spa director’s office in Tysons, McLean, or Washington, D.C.

    2. Real Clients. Real Skills. Not Just Mannequins.

A lot of schools teach you about skincare. AVI trains you to do skincare — on real people, with real expectations, starting early in your program.

Our student clinic gives you supervised, hands-on experience performing facials, waxing, and advanced treatments on paying clients. You graduate with hours of real-world technique under your belt, not just textbook knowledge.

That’s the difference between a graduate who is technically licensed and a graduate who is genuinely hireable on day one.

    3. Small Classes. Instructors Who Know Your Name.

AVI is not a factory. We keep class sizes intentionally small so you get meaningful time with your instructors — not just a seat in a crowded room.

Our instructors are working industry professionals who bring real-world Northern Virginia market knowledge into every lesson. They’ve worked in the spas and medical aesthetics environments you want to work in. They know what local employers actually expect — and they’ll prepare you accordingly.

Compare that to large regional chains where you can go weeks without a one-on-one conversation with a licensed instructor. The difference shows in your technique, your confidence, and your exam scores.

    4. Virginia State Board Exam Prep Is Built In — Not an Add-On

Earning your esthetics license in Virginia requires passing both a written and a practical exam administered by the Virginia Board of Cosmetology. AVI’s curriculum is built around that reality from day one.

We don’t squeeze in exam prep at the end. State board preparation is woven throughout your 600 hours so that by the time you sit for your exam, the content feels familiar — not like a last-minute cram session.

Our graduates sit for the Virginia Board with confidence. That’s not an accident. It’s curriculum design.

    5. You’re Training for This Market

Northern Virginia is one of the most economically robust regions in the country. The DC metro area is home to a dense concentration of medical spas, luxury day spas, resort hotels, and high-end retail skincare brands — all of which hire trained estheticians.

AVI is based here. Our instructors work here. Our career support is built for this market specifically — not a generic national playbook. When you graduate, you’re not starting from zero on your own. You’re launching into a job market your school already understands.

What You’ll Learn: The AVI Esthetics Curriculum

Virginia requires 600 hours of esthetics training to qualify for licensure. Every one of those hours at AVI is structured to build your technical skill, professional judgment, and client communication ability.

    Core Curriculum Areas

    🧴 Skin Science & Analysis
Understand skin at a foundational level — anatomy, physiology, skin types, conditions, and contraindications. You’ll learn how to assess a client’s skin accurately and design treatments that produce real results.

    💆 Facial Treatments
The cornerstone of esthetic practice. You’ll master manual facial techniques, steaming, extraction, mask application, and customizing treatments for different skin types and client goals.

    🪒 Hair Removal & Waxing
Perform professional waxing techniques on the face and body with precision, hygiene, and client comfort in mind. Learn contraindications, aftercare protocols, and how to minimize adverse reactions.

    ⚗️ Chemical Exfoliation & Peels
Learn the science behind chemical exfoliants, alpha hydroxy acids, and superficial chemical peels — including how to select the right treatment, apply it safely, and advise clients on aftercare.

    💎 Microdermabrasion
Develop hands-on proficiency with mechanical exfoliation techniques including microdermabrasion — one of the most in-demand services at medical spas and advanced skincare practices throughout Northern Virginia.

    🛁 Body Treatments
Expand your service menu with professional body treatment applications including exfoliation, wraps, and moisturizing therapies.

    🔬 Infection Control & Safety
Virginia takes sanitation seriously — and so do we. You’ll graduate with a thorough understanding of infection control, sterilization protocols, and professional standards that protect both your clients and your license.

💼 Retail, Client Communication & Business Fundamentals
A technically skilled esthetician who can’t communicate with clients or recommend products leaves money and opportunities on the table. AVI trains you to consult, educate, and build genuine client relationships — skills that directly impact your earning potential.

📋 Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
Integrated throughout your program, our state board prep covers both the written (theory) and practical examination components. You’ll take practice assessments, review state regulations, and enter your exam day prepared.

Step 5: Pass Your Virginia State Board Exam & Get Licensed

Once you pass, you’re a Virginia Licensed Esthetician. It’s official. The career you’ve been working toward is now yours to build.

    Tuition & Financial Aid

We’re going to be honest with you: tuition is a real investment. We respect that, and we won’t minimize it.

What we will tell you is this: a career as a licensed esthetician in Northern Virginia generates real, ongoing income — and your training investment is the foundation of that income. For most graduates, the return on that investment begins within their first year of working.

    Financial Aid Options at AVI

AVI Career Training is an accredited institution eligible for Federal Financial Aid through Title IV programs — including Pell Grants and federal student loans for qualifying students. This is a significant distinction between AVI and non-accredited beauty schools that cannot offer federal aid access.

We also accept the GI Bill® for eligible veterans and military-connected students, including many military spouses who are part of our Northern Virginia community.

    Additional financial support options include:

  • Payment plans
  • Institutional scholarships (ask your admissions advisor about current availability)
  • Workforce development funding for qualifying career-changers
  • The Right Way to Think About Cost

Think about tuition not as a one-time expense but as a monthly cost relative to your future monthly income. A 600-hour program is a defined, finite commitment — with a concrete credential and a licensable career on the other end.

For students who are currently underemployed, working in a field they don’t love, or returning to the workforce after time away, esthetics training can represent not just an investment in income — but an investment in quality of life.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Do I need any prior experience or prerequisites to enroll in AVI’s Esthetics program?

No prior esthetics experience is required to enroll. AVI’s program is designed to take students from the very beginning — whether you’re entering beauty education for the first time, changing careers, or returning to the workforce after time away. A high school diploma or GED is required for enrollment. Your admissions advisor can walk you through any additional requirements during your initial conversation.

    2. How long will it take me to complete the program? Is there a flexible schedule?

Virginia requires 600 hours of training to qualify for the esthetics licensure exam. The length of time it takes you to accumulate those hours depends on your schedule. Contact our admissions team to discuss current schedule options — including any daytime, evening, or weekend availability — so you can find a pace that works with your existing work or family commitments. Many of our students are working adults and parents who successfully complete the program while managing other responsibilities.

    3. What is the Virginia esthetics licensing exam, and how does AVI prepare me for it?

After completing your 600 hours, you’ll apply to sit for the Virginia Board of Cosmetology’s esthetics licensure examinations, which include a written (theory) component and a practical (hands-on) component. AVI builds state board preparation into your program from the start — not just at the end. You’ll practice practical skills to board standards throughout your training, take written theory assessments, and graduate familiar with the exam format and content. Our goal is to send every graduate into their exam day confident and prepared.

    4. What kind of job placement support does AVI provide after graduation?

AVI provides dedicated career support to graduates, including resume development guidance, interview preparation, and connections to Northern Virginia’s employer network in spa, wellness, and medical aesthetics. We also support graduates interested in booth rental, private studio work, or entrepreneurship. We don’t consider our job done when you receive your diploma — we’re invested in what comes next.

    5. I’ve seen online esthetics programs advertised. Can I complete part of this training online?

This is one of the most important questions a prospective esthetics student can ask — and we want to give you a straight answer. Virginia state law requires that esthetics training hours be completed in person, in a licensed facility. Online-only or hybrid programs that cannot fulfill Virginia’s mandatory hands-on clinical hour requirements will not qualify you to sit for the Virginia Board of Cosmetology’s licensure exam. Before enrolling anywhere, verify that the program is fully compliant with Virginia DPOR and SCHEV requirements. AVI is COE-accredited, SCHEV-certified, and 100% compliant with all Virginia state licensure requirements. When you graduate from AVI, you are eligible to sit for your licensing exam — full stop.

    6. When does the next cohort start?

Program start dates vary. Contact our admissions team at (703) 943-9841 or fill out the form below to find out what’s available and whether seats remain open. If a start date is close, your advisor will let you know what you need to do to secure your spot.

600 hours. A real credential. A career you can actually build.
