Why Choose AVI Career Training for Cosmetology?

There are several paths to a cosmetology license in Virginia. Not all of them are equal. Here’s what makes AVI different — and why that difference matters when you’re investing your time, money, and future.

1. Accreditation That Actually Opens Doors

AVI Career Training is COE (Council on Occupational Education) accredited and SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) certified. These aren’t just letters on a wall — they’re your guarantee that:

  • Your training meets the requirements of the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) for licensure eligibility
  • You can access federal Title IV financial aid, including Pell Grants and federal student loans
  • Your credential is recognized by salons, spas, and employers throughout Virginia, the DMV, and beyond

When you’re choosing a cosmetology school, accreditation is the single most important factor to verify. At AVI, you never have to guess.

2. Real-Client Salon Experience Before You Graduate

From early in your training, you’ll work on real clients in our student salon — not just mannequin heads, not just classmates. You’ll learn to consult, communicate, and perform services under the guidance of licensed instructors who’ve worked in the industry. By the time you sit for your Virginia State Board exam, you won’t just know the material. You’ll have lived it.

3. Inclusive Training for Every Skin Tone and Hair Texture

The Northern Virginia and DC metro region is one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse markets in the country. AVI’s curriculum reflects that reality. Our cosmetology program trains students to work skillfully and confidently on every skin tone and every hair texture — from fine straight hair to coily natural hair, from light to deep complexions. This isn’t a specialty add-on. It’s the foundation of how we teach.

When employers in this market hire a cosmetologist, they need someone who can serve their entire clientele. AVI graduates can.

4. Instructors Who’ve Been Where You’re Going

Our instructors aren’t just educators — they’re licensed professionals with real-world experience in salons, spas, and the broader beauty industry. They bring current techniques, industry insight, and a genuine investment in your success into every class. Classes are kept intentionally small so you get the individual attention that actually moves your skills forward.

5. Located in the Heart of Northern Virginia’s Economic Corridor

AVI is located at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 — in the Tysons/Vienna corridor, one of the most economically active areas in Northern Virginia. You’re minutes from Fairfax, McLean, Reston, Tysons Corner, and Falls Church: communities with thriving salon markets, high earning potential, and a growing demand for skilled cosmetology professionals.

You’re not training far from the opportunity. You’re training inside it.

Program Curriculum: What You’ll Learn in 1,500 Hours

Virginia state law requires 1,500 hours of cosmetology training to qualify for the DPOR licensing examination. Every cosmetologist licensed in Virginia — regardless of which school they attend — completes this requirement. At AVI, we use every one of those hours intentionally.

We don’t treat state board prep as an afterthought — it’s woven into your training from the beginning so that by the time you reach graduation, you’re ready to pass and get licensed.

Career Outcomes: What’s Waiting on the Other Side

A cosmetology license is one of the most versatile career credentials you can earn. It’s your foundation — and what you build on it is up to you.

Job Titles You Can Pursue

  • Licensed Cosmetologist — full-service salon employment
  • Hair Stylist / Colorist — specialized salon roles with premium earning potential
  • Booth Renter / Independent Contractor — run your own business within an established salon space
  • Salon Owner / Operator — entrepreneurial path to long-term wealth-building
  • Platform Artist / Brand Educator — teach techniques, work with beauty brands, present at trade shows
  • Session Stylist — editorial, film, television, and event work
  • Salon Manager — move into operations and leadership

Earning Potential in Northern Virginia

The Northern Virginia and DC metro market consistently pays above national averages for licensed cosmetologists, driven by the region’s high cost of living, affluent clientele, and dense population.

  • Entry-level cosmetologist in NoVA: approximately $35,000–$42,000 annually
  • Experienced cosmetologist with steady clientele: $50,000–$65,000+
  • Top-performing booth renters and salon owners: $80,000+ — with no ceiling

Those figures don’t include tips, which are a consistent and meaningful part of cosmetologist income at every level. And for booth renters and salon owners, your earning potential grows directly with your skills, your reputation, and your drive.

For context: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady demand for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists nationally, and the DMV market’s size and growth make it one of the most opportunity-rich regions in the country for beauty professionals.

You’re Not Just Getting a Job — You’re Building a Career

The cosmetology license isn’t a ceiling. It’s a launching pad. AVI graduates go on to work at high-end salons in Tysons and McLean, open their own suites and booths, build social media followings that become full businesses, and create the kind of career flexibility that most professional paths simply don’t offer. You set your schedule. You build your clientele. You own your income.

Step 3: Complete Your 1,500 Hours

Over approximately 12–16 months, you’ll complete AVI’s 1,500-hour cosmetology curriculum — a combination of theory coursework, supervised skills practice, and real-client salon floor experience. You’ll build your technique, your confidence, and your professional identity.

Step 4: Graduate and Apply for Your Virginia License

Upon completing your hours and meeting all program requirements, you’ll graduate and apply to take the Virginia DPOR Cosmetology Licensing Examination (written and practical). AVI’s state board preparation ensures you arrive ready. Upon passing, you’ll receive your Virginia Cosmetology License — your credential to practice professionally in the Commonwealth.

Step 5: Launch Your Career

From application to license in as little as 14 months. The time is going to pass regardless. The question is whether you’ll be licensed at the end of it.

Tuition & Financial Aid

We believe cost should never be the barrier that stands between someone and the career they want. AVI Career Training offers multiple options to make your cosmetology education financially accessible.

Financial Aid Options

Federal Financial Aid
AVI’s COE accreditation makes students eligible to apply for federal Title IV financial aid, including Pell Grants and federal student loans for those who qualify. If you have a high school diploma or GED and meet federal eligibility requirements, you may be able to significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

To explore your eligibility, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov using AVI Career Training’s school code.

GI Bill® Benefits
AVI is approved to accept GI Bill® education benefits, making our program accessible to veterans, active-duty service members, and eligible military family members. If you’re connected to the military community — including military spouses — speak with our admissions team about how to apply your benefits to your cosmetology training.

Payment Plans
AVI offers payment plan options to help students manage tuition over time rather than in a single lump sum. Our admissions advisors can walk you through the options that fit your situation.

Think About the Return

When evaluating the cost of cosmetology school, consider what you’re buying: a Virginia state-recognized credential that qualifies you to work, earn tips, rent a booth, or own a salon in one of the highest-income metro areas in the country.

Northern Virginia cosmetologists earn between $35,000 and $65,000+ annually in salary alone — and that number grows with experience, specialization, and clientele development. A quality education from an accredited institution is an investment with a measurable return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any prior experience or cosmetology knowledge to enroll?

No prior experience is required. AVI’s cosmetology program is designed to take you from the beginning — whether you’ve never held a pair of shears or you’ve been doing friends’ hair for years. What matters is that you’re motivated, willing to learn, and ready to put in the work. Our instructors will meet you where you are and build your skills from there.

Is the program offered with flexible scheduling?

We understand that many of our students are balancing existing responsibilities — jobs, families, caregiving, military service. Contact our admissions team to discuss current scheduling options and find the track that works best for your life. Flexibility is part of how we make this program accessible to real people with real commitments.

How does Virginia cosmetology licensing actually work?

To become a licensed cosmetologist in Virginia, you must:

  1. Complete 1,500 hours of training at a SCHEV-certified cosmetology school (like AVI)
  2. Graduate and receive your certificate of completion
  3. Submit an application to the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR)
  4. Pass the Virginia Cosmetology Examination — which includes a written theory component and a practical hands-on skills component
  5. Receive your Virginia Cosmetology License and legally practice in the Commonwealth

AVI’s accreditation and certification mean your hours count toward DPOR’s requirements. Our state board preparation curriculum means you’ll be ready to pass the exam when the time comes.

What does cosmetology school cost — and how do I pay for it?

Tuition varies based on your program track and start date. The more important question is how much it costs you after aid. AVI students routinely reduce their out-of-pocket costs through Pell Grants, federal loans, GI Bill® benefits, and payment plans. The best way to get an accurate picture is to speak with an admissions advisor, who can walk you through your specific eligibility before you commit to anything.

What kind of career support does AVI provide after graduation?

Our commitment to your success doesn’t end at graduation. AVI provides career guidance resources to help you transition into the professional market — including guidance on job searching in the Northern Virginia salon market, understanding booth rental versus employment arrangements, and navigating the business side of a cosmetology career. Speak with your admissions advisor or instructors about the specific resources available to you.

I’m considering a career change — am I too old to start cosmetology school?

Absolutely not. Career changers are a valued and growing part of the AVI student community. Whether you’re 28 and pivoting from a job that never felt right, or 45 and ready to build something that’s entirely your own, you belong here. Many of our most successful graduates came to cosmetology as their second — or third — career. What you bring from your previous professional life — customer service experience, work ethic, communication skills, business sense — is an asset, not a liability.

The cosmetology license doesn’t ask how old you are. It asks whether you’ve completed the hours, passed the exam, and are ready to serve clients. If the answer is yes, you’re a cosmetologist.

Apply Today — Your Career Starts With One Step

You’ve spent time researching. You’ve read about the program, the career paths, the earning potential, and the licensing process. Here’s what we know: the right time to start is now.

Every month you spend without your cosmetology license is another month working toward someone else’s dream instead of your own. The 1,500 hours are going to pass. The only question is whether you’ll be licensed when they do.

AVI Career Training is ready to help you get there.
