Why Hundreds of NoVA Students Choose AVI

✅ COE Accredited ✅ SCHEV Certified ✅ GI Bill® Accepted
Nationally recognized accreditation — not just a certificate mill Virginia state approval you can trust One of the few NoVA barber programs that accepts military education benefits

Why Choose AVI for Your Barbering Career?

There’s no shortage of barber schools out there. Here’s the difference when you train at AVI.

1. Dual Accreditation That Actually Means Something

AVI Career Training is both COE Accredited (Council on Occupational Education) and SCHEV Certified (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia). That’s not just paperwork — it’s the difference between a credential that opens doors and one that gets ignored.

When you hand a potential employer or licensing board your AVI certificate, it holds weight. When you apply for federal financial aid, AVI’s accreditation makes you eligible. When you’re ready to open your own shop, your training background is one that industry lenders and mentors recognize.

Many competitors in this market have one of these. Not both.

2. Instruction That Reflects the Full Spectrum of Clients You’ll Actually Serve

The DC metro area is one of the most diverse regions in the country. Your future clientele will span skin tones, hair textures, and cultural expectations. AVI is built around inclusive beauty education — our program trains you to work beautifully on every client who sits in your chair, not a limited demographic sample.

This isn’t a talking point. It’s baked into our curriculum, our instructor approach, and the real clients you’ll serve in our student clinic environment. Culturally competent technique isn’t an elective here — it’s the standard.

3. Hands-On Hours, Not Lecture Hours

You don’t become a barber by watching PowerPoints. At AVI, the bulk of your training happens with clippers in hand, tools on the station, and real clients in the chair. Our hands-on lab environment means you graduate with actual muscle memory and portfolio-ready skills, not just theoretical knowledge of how a fade is supposed to look.

By the time you sit for your Virginia State Board exam, you won’t just know the material — you’ll have lived it.

4. Intimate, Personalized Learning Environment

AVI is not a franchise. We’re not processing hundreds of students through a conveyor belt program designed to hit quarterly enrollment numbers. We’re a boutique career school where instructors know your name, track your progress, and push you to grow past what you thought your ceiling was.

If you’ve ever walked away from a classroom feeling invisible, AVI is a different experience.

5. A Location Built for Northern Virginia Life

We’re located at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182 — centrally accessible from Fairfax, McLean, Reston, Tysons, Herndon, Falls Church, and the broader DC metro corridor. If you’re working, managing a family, or transitioning from military service, our Vienna location keeps your training close to the life you’re already living.

What You’ll Learn: The AVI Barbering Curriculum

1,500 Hours. Every One of Them Counts.

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of barbering education to sit for the state licensing exam. At AVI, we use every one of those hours intentionally — building your skills from foundational technique to advanced artistry, and wrapping it all in the professional and business knowledge you’ll need to thrive after graduation.

Core Skill Areas

✂️ Cutting & Fading Techniques
The technical heart of modern barbering. You’ll develop command of scissor over comb, clipper work, skin fades, taper fades, and the precise detail work that separates good barbers from great ones. We don’t just teach you to cut hair — we teach you to read head shape, hair texture, and client vision and execute accordingly.

🪒 Shaving & Razor Work
The straight razor is a rite of passage. You’ll learn classic hot towel shaves, beard shaping, neck cleanup, and the client experience protocols that turn a $30 shave into a $30 tip. This is where barbering distinguishes itself from general cosmetology — and where AVI trains you to shine.

🧔 Beard Design & Grooming
Beard culture isn’t going anywhere. You’ll master the full toolkit — outline shaping, mustache work, beard fade blending, and grooming consultations — so you can service the growing men’s grooming market with confidence.

💈 Men’s Hair Design & Styling
From classic cuts to contemporary men’s texture styling, you’ll build a versatile technical range that keeps clients coming back. Understanding product application, wave patterns, and style-specific techniques gives you the ability to serve a full spectrum of modern male clients.

🎨 Scalp and Hair Health
Great barbers don’t just cut — they consult. You’ll learn scalp analysis, hair loss awareness, sanitation protocols, and the chemistry behind the products you recommend. This knowledge builds client trust and creates the kind of repeat-visit loyalty that sustains a career.

📋 Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
State board isn’t an afterthought at AVI — it’s woven into your entire program. You’ll cover the practical and written components of the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology exam with structured prep, mock assessments, and instructor-guided review. Our goal is simple: you walk in ready, and you walk out licensed.

💼 Business & Professional Development
Whether you plan to work in a shop, go booth rental, or eventually own your own space, you’ll need more than technical skill. AVI’s program includes:
– Client communication and consultation best practices
– Sanitation, safety, and Virginia state regulations
– Business basics: booth rental vs. commission vs. shop ownership
– Building a personal brand and clientele from scratch

Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate

The credential is the starting line. Here’s what the finish line actually looks like.

What Licensed Barbers in Northern Virginia Earn

The Northern Virginia and DC metro market is one of the strongest in the country for skilled barbers. The region’s dense population, high disposable income, and consistent demand for men’s grooming create a career environment where skilled barbers can build serious income.

Estimated earnings for licensed barbers in the NoVA/DMV market:

  • Entry-level (Year 1–2): $35,000–$50,000/year
  • Experienced barbers (3–5 years): $50,000–$70,000/year
  • Shop owners / independent booth rental: $60,000–$100,000+ (income varies based on clientele, location, and business model)

Salary estimates are based on regional labor market data from BLS.gov and industry surveys. Individual results vary based on effort, location, and client development.

The barber chair also offers something a traditional office job rarely does: tips. In a market like NoVA, skilled barbers regularly earn $15–$30 in tips per client, on top of service rates. Build a loyal book of regulars — which the right training accelerates — and your daily take-home looks very different from your hourly wage alone.

Job Titles and Career Paths

Graduating from AVI’s Barbering Program opens doors to a wide range of career directions:

  • Licensed Barber — Commission or hourly employee at an established shop
  • Booth Renter — Run your own mini-business within a shared space; common path for barbers within 1–3 years post-graduation
  • Shop Owner / Entrepreneur — The goal for many students; AVI’s business curriculum sets you up for this path
  • Mobile Barber — High-demand service for executives, athletes, and high-net-worth clients in the DC metro
  • Platform Artist / Brand Representative — Industry educators and product brand ambassadors, often developed after a few years of professional experience
  • Military Barber or Contracted Grooming Services — Specific opportunity within the NoVA/DC military community

Why the Northern Virginia Market Is Built for This Career

Northern Virginia is not a struggling market. It’s one of the highest-income metro areas in the United States, anchored by federal government, defense contracting, tech, and a massive, permanently growing population base.

That means:

  • Dense clientele. Tens of thousands of potential clients within a 15-minute radius of any given barbershop in Fairfax County alone.
  • Recession-resistant demand. Hair grows whether the economy is up or down. Men’s grooming has shown consistent growth even during economic downturns.
  • Strong military community. Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Fort Belvoir, the Pentagon, Quantico — the NoVA corridor is packed with active-duty, reserve, and veteran clients who need regular sharp cuts and are loyal to barbers they trust.
  • High average ticket prices. NoVA’s income levels support premium service pricing. A $45 cut with a $15 tip in this market isn’t exceptional — it’s standard for skilled barbers with established clientele.

Your Path from Applicant to Licensed Barber

Getting licensed doesn’t have to feel complicated. Here’s exactly how it works at AVI.

Step 1: Explore & Connect

Start by reaching out. Fill out our inquiry form, call us at (703) 943-9841, or visit us at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182. We’ll answer your questions, walk you through the program, and make sure barbering at AVI is the right fit for your goals and schedule.

There’s no pressure and no sales pitch. Just a real conversation.

Step 2: Apply

Complete your application through our online application portal. We’ll walk you through what documentation you need and connect you with our financial aid team if you need help understanding your options.

Basic admission requirements:
– Valid government-issued photo ID
– High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
– Minimum age: 17 (must be 18 to take the Virginia Board exam)
– Completed enrollment application

No prior cosmetology or barbering experience required.

Step 3: Enroll & Activate Financial Aid

Once accepted, you’ll complete your enrollment paperwork and work with AVI’s financial aid team to explore what assistance you may qualify for. Financial aid is available for eligible students, and AVI is proud to accept the GI Bill® — an important resource for the thousands of veterans and active-duty military members in Northern Virginia considering career transitions.

If you have questions about costs or aid, don’t let uncertainty stop you from calling. We’d rather have that conversation with you directly than have cost be a reason you don’t pursue the career you want.

Step 4: Train — 1,500 Hours of Real Skill Development

Show up. Work hard. Build your craft. Your 1,500-hour program at AVI is structured to take you from fundamentals to fluency — covering every technique, concept, and practical skill required by the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

You’ll work in our student clinic with real clients, receive direct instructor feedback, complete state board prep, and graduate with a portfolio of documented skills and hands-on experience.

Step 5: Graduate and Get Licensed

After completing your 1,500 hours, you’ll be eligible to apply for the Virginia Barber License Examination — both the written (theory) and practical (hands-on) components administered by the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

AVI’s comprehensive state board preparation means you’ll go into that exam with confidence, not just hope.

Once you pass, you’ll receive your Virginia Barber License — your legal authorization to practice professionally in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the credential that starts your career.

Step 6: Launch Your Career

From here, the path is yours. Whether you’re heading to an established shop, setting up a booth rental, or starting to lay the groundwork for your own business, AVI’s career support resources are available to help you make that next move with a plan.

Tuition & Financial Aid

An Investment That Pays for Itself

Let’s put the cost of barber school in honest perspective.

The average licensed barber in Northern Virginia earns $45,000–$65,000 per year — and that’s before tips or the upside of shop ownership. Your AVI training is a finite investment with a career’s worth of return. Most graduates, if they commit to their career, recover the cost of their education within their first year of licensed work.

Financial Aid Options at AVI

AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), which means our students may qualify for federal financial aid through the U.S. Department of Education — including Pell Grants and student loans for eligible applicants.

AVI also proudly accepts the GI Bill® — one of the most significant benefits available to the large veteran and active-duty military community in Northern Virginia. If you’ve served, your benefits may cover a substantial portion of your training costs.

Additional financial aid and payment options may be available. Contact our team directly to discuss your specific situation — every student’s financial picture is different, and we’d rather help you find a path than let cost be a barrier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience to enroll in AVI’s Barbering Program?

No prior experience is required. Our 1,500-hour program is designed to take complete beginners — people who’ve never touched a professional clipper — and build them into licensed, career-ready barbers. If you already have some background in cutting or grooming, great: you’ll build on it. If you’re starting from scratch, our curriculum is structured to meet you exactly where you are.

The only thing you need coming in is the drive to learn and a genuine interest in the craft.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours to qualify for the state licensing exam. How quickly you complete those hours depends on your schedule and the current program schedule at AVI. Full-time students typically complete the program in approximately 12–14 months. Part-time or modified schedule options may affect that timeline.

Contact AVI directly at (703) 943-9841 to discuss current scheduling options and find the pace that works for your life.

Can I attend barber school while working a job?

Schedule flexibility is one of the most common concerns we hear from prospective students — and it’s a completely valid one. Most people coming into this program have responsibilities outside of school. Reach out to our admissions team to discuss current schedule formats and find an arrangement that makes training possible without forcing you to give up everything else on day one.

Contact us here or call (703) 943-9841 to talk through your schedule.

What does the Virginia Barber Licensing Exam involve?

The Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology administers a two-part exam:

  1. Written (Theory) Exam — Covers Virginia barbering law and regulations, sanitation and safety, anatomy, and the theoretical knowledge behind the techniques you’ve learned. Administered by PSI Exams.

  2. Practical (Skills) Exam — A hands-on demonstration of your barbering techniques, conducted on a mannequin or live model depending on the current exam format. You’ll demonstrate the core skills you’ve trained on throughout your 1,500 hours.

AVI’s curriculum is specifically structured around state board readiness. You’ll have dedicated prep time, mock practical assessments, and written exam review built into your final training hours. Our goal is that you sit for that exam feeling overprepared — not scrambling at the last minute.

Does AVI help with job placement after graduation?

AVI provides career support resources to help graduates make their transition from student to working professional. This includes guidance on building your professional portfolio, understanding the Northern Virginia job market, and navigating your options — whether that’s working in a shop, exploring booth rental, or beginning to plan for your own business.

We’re also deeply connected to the Northern Virginia beauty and grooming community. That community connection matters when you’re trying to land your first position or find the right environment to grow.

For the most specific information about current career support offerings, contact our team directly at (703) 943-9841 or through our contact form.
