Why Choose AVI for Barbering?
You’ve got options. Here’s why serious students choose AVI.
1. Credentials That Actually Open Doors
AVI is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t just letters on a wall — they’re the reason your Virginia Barber License will be recognized at every shop, franchise, and barbershop you walk into. Some out-of-area or online-heavy programs can’t say the same. We can.
2. You’re Not a Number Here
Large chain schools process hundreds of students at a time. AVI doesn’t. Our small cohort model means your instructor actually knows your name, your learning style, and where you need to push harder. You get the kind of personalized mentorship that moves you through your hours faster and walks you into the Virginia State Board exam with real confidence — not just a stack of study guides.
3. Training for Northern Virginia’s Real Clientele
Northern Virginia is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in the United States. Your future clients are Black, Latino, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and everything in between. AVI’s curriculum doesn’t treat that as an afterthought — we train you to work beautifully on every hair type, every texture, every skin tone. That’s what gets you booked solid. That’s what builds a reputation.
4. Instructors Who Know This Market
AVI’s barbering instructors aren’t teaching from a textbook written about some other city. They know the Northern Virginia and DC metro market — the culture, the clients, the employers, the opportunities. When it’s time to find a chair or open your own shop, you’re walking out with connections, not just a certificate.
5. GI Bill® Accepted — Veterans Welcome
Transitioning out of the military? AVI proudly accepts GI Bill® benefits for our Barbering Program. Barbering is one of the most natural fits for veterans — disciplined, skilled, independent, community-focused. We’ve helped veterans make this transition, and we’ll help you too.

Barbering is not a fallback career. It is a skill-based trade with genuine earning potential, a low barrier to entry, and nearly unlimited upside for those willing to build a clientele and a reputation.
What Can You Earn as a Licensed Barber in Virginia?
Barber income in the Northern Virginia and DC metro area consistently outpaces the national average, driven by high disposable income in the region, premium grooming culture, and a dense population that supports serious volume.
- Entry-Level / First Chair: Competitive hourly rates plus tips; most new barbers in Northern Virginia are earning well within their first few months of licensure
- Experienced Barbers (3–5 years): Many licensed barbers in this market earn $45,000–$75,000+ annually, with top earners at established shops doing significantly more
- Booth Renters & Shop Owners: Independent income potential is limited only by your clientele and business acumen — six-figure barbering businesses exist in this market
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbers in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro area rank among the highest-paid in the country.
Where Can You Work?
Your Virginia Barber License lets you:
- Work at an established barbershop — W-2 employment with built-in clientele, ideal for new grads building skills and speed
- Rent a booth — Set your own hours, build your own client list, keep more of what you make
- Work at a franchise or upscale men’s grooming brand — National brands like Floyd’s, Sport Clips, and high-end hotel barbershops actively recruit licensed barbers in the NoVA/DC metro area
- Go mobile — A growing number of barbers in this market serve clients at homes, offices, and events
- Open your own shop — The ultimate goal for many; your AVI training gives you the business foundation to get there

Here’s what we want you to know.
Financial Aid Is Available
AVI Career Training participates in federal financial aid programs. Our admissions team will walk you through your eligibility without the runaround.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real Questions. Straight Answers.
Q: What are the requirements to enroll in AVI’s Barbering Program?
A: You’ll need a high school diploma or GED (or its equivalent). You don’t need prior experience in barbering or cosmetology — that’s what we’re here for. If you can commit to showing up and putting in the work, we can teach you the rest. Questions about eligibility? Contact our admissions team and we’ll get you a straight answer fast.
Q: How long does it take to become a barber in Virginia?
A: Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of approved barbering instruction from a SCHEV-certified school before you can sit for the Virginia State Barber Board examination. At AVI, your training schedule will determine how quickly you accumulate those hours. After passing both the written and practical portions of the state board exam, you’ll be fully licensed. The timeline from enrollment to license depends on your schedule, but our admissions team can give you a realistic projection based on your availability.
Q: Is the schedule flexible? I work full time right now.
A: We understand that most students coming to AVI have lives, jobs, and financial obligations they can’t just pause. Schedule flexibility is something our admissions team addresses directly with every prospective student. Contact us to discuss current scheduling options and find out what would actually work for your situation. We’re not going to give you a one-size-fits-all answer here — let’s have a real conversation.
Q: Will my Virginia Barber License be accepted at shops and employers outside Virginia?
A: Your Virginia Barber License is issued by the Virginia Board of Barbering, a state regulatory body. Many states have reciprocity agreements or endorsement pathways that allow licensed barbers from Virginia to transfer their license without re-examining. If you plan to eventually work in Maryland, DC, or another state, the specifics of reciprocity depend on that state’s board requirements at the time you apply. What we can tell you: graduating from a COE-accredited, SCHEV-certified program is the strongest credential foundation you can have. Employers and state boards respect that.
Q: Does AVI help with job placement after graduation?
A: AVI Career Training connects students to the Northern Virginia and DC metro market in ways that out-of-area schools simply can’t replicate. Our instructors know this market, our alumni are working in it, and we actively support students in making the transition from training floor to first chair. While we can’t guarantee employment — no honest school can — we prepare you to compete seriously for positions in one of the strongest grooming markets in the country. We’ll talk through job placement support during your admissions conversation.
Q: I’ve never cut hair before. Is that a problem?
A: Not at all — and honestly, it’s more common than you’d think. The majority of students entering AVI’s Barbering Program are true beginners. You don’t need natural talent waiting to be unlocked; you need the right instruction, consistent practice, and enough repetitions on real clients to build real skill. That’s exactly what 1,500 hours of hands-on AVI training is designed to deliver. Show up ready to learn. We’ll handle the rest.
