Why Choose AVI Career Training for Massage Therapy?

There are other massage therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) schools in Northern Virginia. There’s only one AVI.

Here’s the difference that actually matters when you’re building a career — not just collecting a certificate.

1. Accreditation That Employers Actually Recognize

AVI Career Training is COE Accredited and SCHEV Certified — two credentials that signal quality to every spa, clinic, hospital, chiropractic office, and resort you’ll ever apply to. COE (Council on Occupational Education) accreditation means our program has been independently evaluated and meets rigorous educational standards. SCHEV certification means we’re authorized to operate in Virginia and our graduates are eligible to sit for the state licensing exam.

This isn’t just paperwork. It’s the difference between a credential that opens doors and one that gets your résumé tossed.

“When I was researching schools, I kept seeing AVI come up because of their accreditation. I knew going in that my license would be taken seriously.”

2. Hands-On, Clinic-Based Training — Not Classroom Theory

Massage therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) is a tactile, physical skill. You cannot learn it by watching videos or reading slides. At AVI, you train your hands from day one.

Our Vienna, VA campus features dedicated massage training labs where you practice on real people — not mannequins, not pillows — under the supervision of experienced, licensed instructors. By the time you graduate, you won’t feel like a new therapist. You’ll feel like a practitioner.

This is also why online and hybrid “massage programs” are a trap: Virginia requires hands-on, state-approved training for licensure eligibility. A program you complete from your couch won’t get you a license. AVI’s in-person training will.

3. Small Class Sizes — Instructors Who Know Your Name

You are not a seat number at AVI.

We deliberately keep our class sizes small so that instructors can give you real feedback, real corrections, and real mentorship — not generic instructions delivered to a room of 40 strangers. In a skill-based profession like massage therapy, the quality of your hands depends on the quality of your feedback. You’ll get it here.

This is the fundamental gap between AVI and large national chain schools. They fill seats. We develop therapists.

4. A Schedule Built for Real Life

You have responsibilities. A job, maybe. Kids, possibly. A life that doesn’t pause because you decided to pursue a better career.

AVI’s Massage Therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) program is designed with that reality in mind. We offer scheduling options built for working adults and career changers — so you can pursue your license without burning down everything else you’ve built.

5. A Community That Looks Like the DMV

The Northern Virginia and DC metro area is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the country. Your future clients will reflect that diversity — and so does AVI.

We train students to work confidently and skillfully on every body, every background, every client who walks through the door. Inclusive education isn’t a tagline for us. It’s how we teach.

Massage Therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) Program Curriculum

500 Hours. Everything You Need to Get Licensed and Get Hired.

Virginia’s Board of Nursing requires 500 hours of approved training for massage therapy licensure eligibility. AVI’s curriculum is built to meet that requirement — and to prepare you for the work that happens after you pass the exam.

Here’s what you’ll master:

Core Massage Techniques

Swedish Massage
The foundational modality every licensed therapist must know cold. You’ll learn all five classic strokes — effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction, and vibration — with an emphasis on proper pressure, flow, draping, and client communication. Swedish massage is the basis of virtually every other modality you’ll learn.

Deep Tissue Massage
Designed for clients with chronic tension, muscle pain, and restricted movement, deep tissue work requires precision, body mechanics, and an understanding of muscle layers. You’ll learn to work effectively without burning out your own body — a skill that determines how long your career lasts.

Sports Massage
Northern Virginia is home to athletes, gym-goers, weekend warriors, and military personnel — all of whom are strong potential clients. Sports massage covers pre-event, post-event, and maintenance techniques, injury prevention, and working with active bodies.

Science & Theory Foundation

Anatomy & Physiology
You cannot massage what you don’t understand.
