Why Choose AVI for Cosmetology Training?

There are beauty schools in the Northern Virginia area. There is only one AVI.

Here’s what sets us apart — and why it matters when you’re making a decision this important.

1. Accreditation That Actually Protects You

AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t rubber stamps. They are independent, third-party verifications that our curriculum, our instructors, our facilities, and our student outcomes meet rigorous professional standards.

Why this matters to you: COE accreditation makes you eligible for federal financial aid programs — including Pell Grants and federal loans — that unaccredited schools cannot access. It also means your training will be recognized by employers and licensing boards. When you earn your hours at AVI, they count.

Some schools operate with state licensure only. That’s the minimum. We hold ourselves to more.

2. Inclusive Training — Because Your Future Clients Look Like the World

Beauty doesn’t come in one shade, one texture, or one type. Neither does real cosmetology training.

AVI’s curriculum is built on the principle that a truly skilled cosmetologist is confident and competent working on every client — every skin tone, every hair type, every texture. From fine straight hair to tight coils, from fair complexions to deep melanin-rich skin, you’ll train on the full spectrum of human beauty.

This isn’t a talking point. It’s a competitive advantage when you enter the job market. Salons and clients are hungry for stylists who can genuinely do it all.

3. Small Classes, Real Instructors — Not an Assembly Line

At large national chain schools, you can get lost in a crowd. At AVI, you won’t.

Our instructors are working beauty professionals who bring current, real-world technique into the classroom and clinic floor. They know what Virginia employers are hiring for, what the Board Exam actually tests, and how to prepare you for both. Small class sizes mean you get feedback, not just face time.

You’re not a number here. You’re a future colleague.

4. Location Built for Northern Virginia Life

Located in Vienna, Virginia, AVI sits in the heart of the NoVA/DC metro corridor — accessible from Tysons, Fairfax, Arlington, Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, and the broader DMV area. You don’t have to drive to another state or move to a campus to get quality beauty education. It’s right here.

5. A Community That Includes You

AVI serves a diverse student population — career changers, recent graduates, military spouses and veterans, immigrants seeking U.S. licensure, and future salon owners. If you see yourself in any of those descriptions, you’ll find people just like you in our classrooms. This is beauty education designed for Northern Virginia’s real community, not a glossy brochure version of it.

Cosmetology Program Curriculum: What You’ll Learn

AVI’s cosmetology program is 1,500 clock hours of instruction — the exact requirement set by the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology for licensure eligibility. Every hour is purposeful, designed to prepare you for the Virginia State Board Exam and for the demands of a working professional.

Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
The Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires candidates to complete 1,500 hours and pass both a written (theory) and practical examination. AVI’s program is structured to prepare you for both components with direct exam prep built into the curriculum. Your instructors know what the examiners are looking for — because they’ve been there.

How the Hours Break Down

Your 1,500 hours will be divided between classroom instruction (theory, science, and Virginia Board-required content) and clinic floor hours (real-client services performed under licensed instructor supervision). The clinic floor is where technical skills become second nature — and where you’ll build the confidence that separates a nervous test-taker from a polished professional.

Career Outcomes: Where Can Cosmetology Take You?

A cosmetology license is a key that opens multiple doors. Here’s where AVI graduates can go.

Job Titles Available to Licensed Cosmetologists

  • Hair Stylist / Salon Stylist — The most common entry point; commission or hourly-based at an established salon
  • Booth Renter — Rent a chair, work for yourself, set your own hours and prices
  • Color Specialist — Specialize in color services to command premium pricing
  • Natural Hair Specialist — A fast-growing niche with strong demand in the DMV market
  • Session Stylist — Film, television, fashion, and media productions
  • Bridal & Event Stylist — Wedding and special event work, often weekend-heavy
  • Platform Artist / Educator — Teach for a product company or distributor
  • Salon Manager or Owner — Use your license as the foundation for a business

The Virginia & DMV Job Market

Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area represent one of the strongest beauty markets in the country. With a dense, high-income population, a culture of professional presentation, and an extraordinarily diverse community, demand for skilled cosmetologists in this region is consistently strong.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics:
– The median annual wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists nationally is approximately $33,000–$36,000, with experienced stylists, booth renters, and specialists earning significantly more
– Top earners — particularly those building a loyal clientele, specializing in color, or running their own businesses — routinely earn $50,000–$80,000+
– Virginia’s employment of cosmetologists is projected to remain stable, with consistent demand driven by population growth and the services sector

The most important thing to understand about cosmetology income: It grows. Entry-level commission stylists earn one number. A stylist with two years of experience and a booked-out schedule earns another. A booth renter or salon owner writes her own rules entirely. Your license is not a salary cap — it’s a starting line.

What You Can’t Google, Automate, or Offshore

Hair doesn’t cut itself. Color doesn’t apply itself. The human need for skilled hands, trusted advice, and a chair where someone takes care of you — that need isn’t going anywhere. Cosmetology is one of the few careers that is structurally recession-resistant and impossible to outsource overseas.

Your license is job security you hold in your hands.

Step 3: Train

Show up. Learn. Practice. Put in the work on the clinic floor. Your 1,500 hours are an investment in yourself — and the instructors, curriculum, and community at AVI are designed to make every one of those hours count. This is where you go from interested to skilled.

Step 4: Graduate & Pass the Virginia State Board Exam

Upon completing your 1,500 hours, you’ll apply to sit for the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology Examination — both the written and practical portions. AVI’s curriculum is built backward from what the Board tests. By the time you sit for the exam, you’ll have covered every competency, practiced every required skill, and received targeted exam prep from instructors who know what passing looks like.

Step 5: Get Licensed — and Get to Work

Once you pass your Board Exam, the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology issues your license. You’re now a licensed cosmetologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The salary research, the job leads, the career conversations — now they’re all for real.

This step typically comes months after you start, not years.

Tuition & Financial Aid: Cosmetology School May Cost Less Than You Think

One of the most common reasons people hesitate to enroll in cosmetology school is cost. It’s a fair concern. And it’s one we take seriously — which is why we want to address it directly, before you ask.

Federal Financial Aid Is Available

Because AVI Career Training is COE accredited, qualified students may be eligible for federal financial aid programs, including:

  • Pell Grants — Need-based grant funding that does not need to be repaid
  • Federal Direct Loans — Low-interest federal student loans for eligible students
  • Other Title IV programs for which you may qualify

To find out what you may be eligible for, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov. Our admissions team will guide you through the process.

The key point: Many students find that financial aid covers a significant portion of their tuition. The “sticker price” of cosmetology school and the amount you actually pay out of pocket are often very different numbers. Don’t make a decision based on the sticker price alone.

GI Bill® Benefits Accepted

AVI Career Training is approved for GI Bill® education benefits. If you are a veteran, active-duty service member, or qualifying military dependent, your VA education benefits may cover your tuition, fees, and related costs.

We proudly serve Northern Virginia’s substantial military community, and we’re experienced in helping military-connected students navigate the VA benefits process.

📞 Call us at (703) 943-9841 to speak with an admissions advisor about your GI Bill® options.

Payment Plans and Additional Options

Beyond federal aid and GI Bill® benefits, AVI offers payment plan options to help make enrollment accessible. Our admissions team will work with you to find a path that fits your financial situation.

The bottom line: don’t let an uncertain number stop you from exploring a certain opportunity. Talk to us first. Let’s figure out the real cost together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any previous experience to enroll in the cosmetology program?

No prior experience is required. AVI’s cosmetology program is designed to take you from beginner to licensed professional. The only prerequisites are a high school diploma or GED and a genuine motivation to learn. Whether you’ve been doing hair for years informally or have never held a pair of shears, our curriculum will build your skills from the ground up with a structured, professional foundation.

The Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires 1,500 clock hours for cosmetology licensure. Reach out to our admissions team for current schedule options and to find the track that fits your life.

Is the schedule flexible? Can I attend while working or raising a family?

How does the Virginia State Board Exam work, and will AVI prepare me for it?

The Virginia State Board of Cosmetology Examination has two components: a written (theory) exam and a practical (hands-on) exam. Both must be passed to receive your Virginia cosmetology license.

AVI’s curriculum is specifically designed to prepare you for both. Throughout your 1,500 hours, you’ll cover every content area tested on the written exam, and your clinic floor hours will sharpen the practical skills examiners evaluate. As you approach graduation, your instructors will provide targeted exam preparation, review, and practice. Passing the Board is the goal — and we build our training around it.

Does AVI help graduates find jobs after completing the program?

AVI Career Training is committed to your success beyond graduation day. We maintain relationships with salon professionals and employers in the Northern Virginia and DMV market, and we provide career guidance, job-search support, and professional development resources to help graduates launch their careers. We’ll also help you understand all the different paths available to you — commission employment, booth rental, building a clientele — so you can make the choice that’s right for your goals. Your license is just the beginning of what we’re helping you build.
