Why Choose AVI Career Training for Barbering?
There are other options out there. Here’s why serious barbers in Northern Virginia choose AVI.
1. Accreditation That Actually Matters
AVI Career Training is COE Accredited and SCHEV Certified — meaning our program meets rigorous academic and vocational standards recognized by the state of Virginia and the U.S. Department of Education.
Why does that matter to you? Because accreditation is what makes you eligible for federal financial aid, GI Bill® benefits, and a credential that legitimate barbershops, suite rentals, and licensing boards respect.
Not all barber programs are created equal. Unaccredited schools may offer lower price tags — but they often can’t offer you financial aid, and their credentials carry less weight when you’re applying to work at a top shop or signing a lease on your own suite. At AVI, your training is backed by an institution that meets the bar.
2. Hands-On Training with Real Clients — Not Just Mannequins
You learn barbering by doing barbering. AVI’s clinic floor gives you real-client experience from early in your training. You’ll work with actual people across a full range of hair textures, face shapes, and grooming needs — not just the same mannequin head day after day.
By the time you graduate and sit for your Virginia state board exam, you’ve already built the muscle memory, confidence, and chair-side presence that clients and shop owners are looking for. You’re not starting from zero on day one of your career. You’re starting ahead.
3. Training Built for Every Hair Type
Barbering in the DC metro area means working on a diverse, multicultural clientele. You will cut hair across the full spectrum — from tight coils to straight fine hair, from fades to textured waves. AVI’s curriculum is designed to reflect that reality.
Our inclusive training approach means you won’t be caught off guard by a client’s hair type on the floor. You’ll graduate prepared to serve the full NoVA/DC market — one of the most culturally diverse, high-income suburban markets in the country. That versatility isn’t just respectful. It’s a competitive advantage that shows up directly in your earning potential.
4. Embedded in the Northern Virginia Community
AVI is not a national chain. We’re not a cosmetology school that added a barbering module as an afterthought. We are a local, Vienna-based career training institution embedded in the Northern Virginia community.
Our instructors know the DMV market. They know the shops, the suite rental landscape, and the clients in Tysons, Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, McLean, and Fairfax. When you graduate, you’re not starting from scratch in a market you don’t know — you’re launching in the community where you trained.
5. A Culture That Respects the Craft
Barbering carries cultural weight. In Black and Latino communities especially, the barbershop is more than a place to get a cut — it’s a community institution, a place of trust, identity, and connection. At AVI, we take the craft seriously because our students do.
You won’t feel out of place here. You won’t be treated as a footnote in a cosmetology-first environment. The barbering program is built for people who are serious about the trade — and the culture that comes with it.
AVI Barbering Program Curriculum
1,500 Hours. Purpose-Built for the Virginia State Board — and for Your Career.
Virginia requires 1,500 hours of approved training to sit for the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) state board examination and earn your Virginia Barber License. AVI’s program is structured to meet every one of those hours with practical, career-relevant training.

Virginia State Board Preparation
AVI’s curriculum is aligned with the Virginia DPOR Barber licensing examination. Written and practical board prep is integrated throughout your training — not just tacked on at the end.
By the time you complete your 1,500 hours, you’ll be familiar with the test format, comfortable with the practical skills components, and fully prepared to sit for your exam with confidence.
A Note on Time Commitment
1,500 hours sounds like a big number. Here’s context:
A traditional 4-year college degree requires 4,000+ hours of coursework — at many times the cost and with far less certainty about what you’ll earn when you graduate.
AVI’s barbering program is a focused, accelerated path toward a licensed career — not a multi-year detour. Students who attend consistently and stay on track can complete the program in approximately 12–14 months, depending on the schedule they choose.
That’s roughly a year from where you are today to a licensed barber career with real earning potential in one of the country’s strongest suburban markets.
Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate?
The Northern Virginia Market Is Ready for You
You’re not training in a vacuum. You’re training for a specific market — Northern Virginia and the greater DC metro area — and that market is one of the best in the country for barbering careers.
What Virginia Barbers Earn
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbers in the Virginia/DC metro area consistently earn among the highest wages in the country for the trade:
- Entry-level barbers in NoVA can expect to earn in the range of $35,000–$50,000 annually
- Experienced barbers with an established clientele regularly earn $60,000–$100,000+
- Shop owners and suite renters can significantly exceed those figures by controlling their own pricing, hours, and client base
Much of a barber’s income is cash and direct-pay — meaning you’re not waiting on a corporate salary structure to reward your skills. Your income grows as your clientele grows. That’s the trade’s most powerful financial advantage.
Where Northern Virginia Barbers Work
The NoVA corridor is a uniquely high-income market for barbers. You’re operating near:
- Tysons Corner — One of the highest-income commercial corridors on the East Coast
- Reston and Herndon — Tech industry hubs with professionals who prioritize grooming
- McLean and Falls Church — Affluent residential suburbs with strong demand for premium barbershop services
- Vienna and Fairfax — Growing communities with underserved demand for skilled barbers
This is not a market where barbers struggle to find clients. Skilled, licensed, professional barbers in Northern Virginia are in demand.
Career Paths Available to AVI Barbering Graduates
- Employee Barber — Work in an established shop, build your book, earn while you learn the business

Tuition & Financial Aid
We Believe Financial Barriers Shouldn’t Stand Between You and a Career
AVI Career Training is Title IV eligible, which means qualifying students can apply for federal financial aid to help cover the cost of their barbering program. This is only possible because of AVI’s COE accreditation — a significant advantage over unaccredited programs that leave students with no financial support options.
Financial aid options may include:
– Federal Pell Grants (for eligible students — this is money you don’t repay)
– Federal student loans
– Other federal aid programs based on eligibility
AVI also accepts:
– GI Bill® benefits — Veterans and active-duty service members in the Northern Virginia corridor who qualify for VA education benefits can apply those benefits toward AVI’s barbering program. This is a meaningful advantage for the large veteran population in the NoVA/DC area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real Questions. Straight Answers.
Q: Do I need any prior experience to enroll in AVI’s Barbering program?
No prior experience in barbering or cosmetology is required. AVI’s program is built to take students from beginner to board-ready. What you do need is a high school diploma or GED (or the ability to pass an ability-to-benefit assessment as required), and a genuine commitment to completing the program. If you have the drive, we have the training.
Q: How long does it take to complete the 1,500-hour program?
Program length depends on your schedule and attendance consistency. Students attending on a full-time schedule can typically complete the program in approximately 12–14 months. If your schedule requires a part-time track, your admissions advisor can give you a more specific timeline based on the options available when you enroll. There is a clear, achievable finish line — and AVI keeps you on track to reach it.
Q: What are the requirements to get a Virginia Barber License?
To earn your Virginia Barber License through the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you must:
- Complete 1,500 hours of training at a DPOR-approved school (AVI qualifies)
- Pass the Virginia Barber written examination
- Pass the Virginia Barber practical (hands-on) examination
- Submit your license application and applicable fees to DPOR
AVI’s program prepares you for all components of the Virginia state board exam. For the most current licensing requirements, you can also check directly with Virginia DPOR.
Q: Is the schedule flexible? Can I attend while working?
We understand that most of our students have real financial obligations while they’re in school — a job, a family, bills. Contact our admissions team at (703) 943-9841 or via our contact form to discuss current scheduling options. We’ll be transparent with you about what’s available so you can plan accordingly before you enroll.
Q: What kind of job placement support does AVI offer after graduation?
AVI provides career services support to graduating students, including guidance through the Virginia licensing process, professional development resources, and connections to the local Northern Virginia barbering community. Our instructors and staff are embedded in the same DMV market you’ll be entering. That local knowledge is part of what you’re getting when you train at AVI.
Q: I’m a veteran. Can I use my GI Bill® benefits at AVI?
Yes. AVI Career Training accepts GI Bill® benefits for qualifying veterans and service members. Given Northern Virginia’s high concentration of active duty, reserve, and veteran populations from nearby military installations, this is a path many of our students have taken. Contact our admissions team to discuss your specific benefit eligibility and how it applies to the barbering program.
