Why Choose AVI Career Training for Massage Therapy?
There are other schools you could look at. We’d rather just be honest about what makes AVI different — and let you decide.
1. Accreditation That Actually Opens Doors
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). That isn’t just alphabet soup. It means your credential is recognized by Virginia licensing boards, respected by employers — from luxury spas in Tysons Corner to sports medicine clinics in Reston. When you graduate from AVI, you’re graduating from somewhere that matters.
2. Instructors Who Invest in You Personally
At a large regional school, you’re a seat in a classroom. At AVI, you’re a student with a name, a story, and a specific set of goals your instructors actually know about. Our small class sizes aren’t a limitation — they’re the whole point. You’ll get hands-on feedback, real mentorship, and the kind of access to experienced instructors that disappears the moment a class size hits 40. This is where careers are built, not processed.
3. Hands-On Training From Day One
Massage therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) is a physical skill. You don’t learn it by reading about it — you learn it by doing it, again and again, under guidance that sharpens your technique until it becomes second nature. AVI’s program is built around practical, hands-on lab hours where you work on real clients in a supervised clinic environment. By the time you sit for your licensing exam, you won’t just know the material — you’ll have lived it.
4. A Location That Works for Northern Virginia Life
Located at 1595 Spring Hill Rd #720, Vienna, VA 22182, AVI sits in the heart of Northern Virginia — easily accessible from Tysons Corner, McLean, Reston, Falls Church, Herndon, Fairfax, and the surrounding DC metro area. No long commutes to distant campuses. No relocating. Just a commute that fits your life, in the community where you’re already building it.
5. Tuition & Payment Options (No Federal Financial Aid)
We know cost is one of the biggest reasons people talk themselves out of making a change. That’s why AVI works to make this as financially accessible as possible. Federal financial aid (FAFSA/Title IV) is NOT available for this program as it does not meet the minimum 600-hour requirement. AVI offers flexible payment plans and private financing options. AVI proudly accepts the GI Bill® — one of relatively few career training schools in Northern Virginia to do so. If you’ve served, your benefit can work here.
Massage Therapy (NO FINANCIAL AID FOR THIS PROGRAM) Program Curriculum
500 Hours. Everything You Need to Get Licensed and Get to Work.
Virginia’s Board of Nursing requires 500 hours of training to qualify for the Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) credential. AVI’s program is designed specifically around those requirements — so every hour you spend in the classroom and clinic is an hour that moves you toward licensure, not around it.
Here’s what you’ll study:
Core Massage Techniques
Swedish Massage
The foundation of professional massage therapy. You’ll master long, flowing strokes, kneading, and rhythmic techniques that improve circulation, ease muscle tension, and put clients at ease. Swedish massage is the baseline skill that every employer and client will expect you to know — and know well.
Deep Tissue Massage
Moving beyond the surface, deep tissue work targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. You’ll learn how to apply controlled, therapeutic pressure — safely and effectively — to address chronic tension, injury recovery, and postural issues. This is the technique that turns a good massage therapist into a sought-after one.
Sports Massage
Northern Virginia is home to a large, active population — runners, cyclists, gym regulars, and weekend athletes who need therapists who understand how the body performs and recovers. Sports massage training prepares you to work in fitness facilities, sports medicine environments, and with athletic clients who are serious about their performance.
Prenatal and Specialty Techniques
Expanding your skill set opens doors. You’ll be introduced to specialized approaches that serve specific client populations — including prenatal massage — giving you the versatility to serve a broader clientele and command higher session rates as your career grows.
Academic Foundations
Anatomy & Physiology
You cannot safely and effectively treat a body you don’t understand. AVI’s curriculum builds a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology — bones, muscles, connective tissue, the nervous system, circulatory system, and how they all interact. This knowledge isn’t just exam prep — it’s the framework you’ll use every single day in practice.
Kinesiology and Pathology
Understanding how the body moves — and what happens when it doesn’t move correc
