Why Choose AVI for Massage Therapy?
There are other massage therapy programs in the DC metro. But there’s a significant difference between completing a program and building a career — and AVI is built specifically for the latter.
Here’s what sets us apart.
🏅 1. Accreditation That Actually Counts
AVI Career Training is COE (Council on Occupational Education) accredited and SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) certified. These are not optional credentials. They are the standard Virginia employers, licensing boards, and financial aid programs rely on to validate your training.
When you graduate from AVI, your credential carries weight — with spas in Tysons Corner, sports medicine clinics in Reston, and wellness centers across the DC metro. When you graduate from an unaccredited program, you may be ineligible to sit for the Virginia state board exam at all.
Don’t find that out the hard way.
🤝 2. Small Cohorts. Real Mentorship. Not a Number.
AVI operates on a boutique training model. Our class sizes are intentionally small so that instructors can work with you — not just talk at you. You will receive direct, hands-on correction on your technique. You will have real conversations about your goals. You will graduate knowing your instructors by name, and they will know yours.
This is the training environment that produces confident, client-ready therapists — not students who walk out the door hoping theory translates to practice.
📍 3. Trained for the Northern Virginia Market
The DC metro area is one of the most lucrative wellness markets in the United States. Northern Virginia’s combination of high household incomes, health-conscious professionals, active military and veteran communities, and premium spa culture creates exceptional demand for skilled massage therapists.
AVI is located at the center of it — Vienna, Virginia, minutes from Tysons Corner, McLean, Reston, and Falls Church. Our instructors know this market. They have worked in it. They understand what local employers expect, what premium clients demand, and how to position yourself for the best opportunities after graduation.
You are not training for an abstract job market. You are training for this job market.
⚡ 4. A Faster Path That Doesn’t Cut Corners
A four-year degree takes four years. AVI’s 500-hour Massage Therapy program is designed around real people with real lives — people who need to get trained, get licensed, and get earning without spending years in a classroom.
Five hundred hours is the Virginia state requirement for licensure. Every hour in our program is intentional, structured around the skills and knowledge the state board tests and the clients you will actually serve. We don’t pad the curriculum. We don’t waste your time. We prepare you.
💰 5. Financial Aid Available — Including the GI Bill®
The cost of training should not be the reason a career in massage therapy stays a dream. AVI has financial aid available for those who qualify, and we are proud to accept the GI Bill® — honoring the service of veterans and active-duty service members transitioning into civilian careers.
We’ll walk you through your options. More on this below.
Program Curriculum
500 Hours. Every One of Them Matters.
Virginia’s Board of Nursing requires 500 clock hours of massage therapy training from a SCHEV-certified school before you can sit for the licensing exam. AVI’s program fulfills that requirement completely — and does it in a way that prepares you not just to pass a test, but to walk into your first client session with skill and confidence.
What You’ll Learn
Swedish Massage
The foundation of professional massage therapy. You’ll master effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction, and vibration — the core techniques that form the basis of nearly every session you’ll ever deliver. You will learn correct body mechanics from day one, so your own body holds up across a full career.
Deep Tissue Massage
Clients experiencing chronic muscle tension, postural problems, and repetitive stress injuries seek out therapists who can work at deeper layers of tissue. You’ll learn how to apply sustained pressure safely, release fascial restrictions, and address the specific needs of clients dealing with pain — not just relaxation.
Sports Massage
Northern Virginia is home to an enormous athletic and active-duty military population. Sports massage training prepares you to work with pre-event preparation, post-event recovery, and ongoing maintenance for athletes of all levels. This specialization opens doors in sports medicine clinics, physical therapy practices, and fitness centers across the region.
Anatomy & Physiology
You cannot deliver safe, effective massage therapy without understanding the body you’re working on. AVI’s anatomy and physiology curriculum covers the musculoskeletal system, the nervous system, contraindications, pathology, and the physiological effects of massage — the knowledge base that separates a true professional from someone who just learned a routine.
Kinesiology & Body Mechanics
Massage therapy is a physically demanding profession. How you use your own body determines both the quality of your work and the longevity of your career. You’ll learn proper positioning, leverage, posture, and movement so that you can work sustainably for years, not months.
Hydrotherapy & Spa Techniques
Hot stone, hydrotherapy applications, and adjunct spa modalities that expand your marketability and service menu — particularly relevant for the premium spa environments that are abundant in Northern Virginia.
Business & Professional Ethics
Many of AVI’s graduates go on to build private practices or advance into management. Our program covers the professional standards, ethical boundaries, client communication, and business fundamentals that turn a skilled technician into a successful professional.
Virginia State Board Exam Preparation
AVI’s curriculum is built around the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination), which is required for Virginia licensure. We cover exam content systematically throughout the program and provide dedicated board prep so you walk into that exam prepared to pass — on the first attempt.
A Note for Anyone Considering Online Programs
Virginia law requires that massage therapy training be completed in person at a SCHEV-certified institution. Clock hours cannot be completed online. Programs that advertise flexibility through online or hybrid delivery cannot fulfill Virginia’s licensure requirements — and students who enroll in those programs may find themselves unable to sit for the state board exam.
Before you enroll anywhere, ask one question: Is this school SCHEV-certified?
AVI is. We are happy to document it.
Career Outcomes
The Northern Virginia Wellness Market Is Ready for You

Tuition & Financial Aid
An Investment That Pays for Itself
The cost of massage therapy training is real, and we respect that it matters to you. We also want you to see it in context: a one-time investment in 500 hours of training that positions you to earn a professional income for decades.
Financial Aid Is Available
AVI Career Training has financial aid available for students who qualify. If cost is a concern, please do not assume you have to pay for this program entirely out of pocket before you even speak with us. Many students are surprised by what’s available to them.
Financial aid options to discuss with our admissions team include:
- Federal financial aid programs (for eligible students)
- Payment plans designed to make tuition manageable without a lump-sum upfront payment
- GI Bill® — AVI proudly accepts GI Bill® benefits, making our program accessible to veterans, active-duty service members, and eligible dependents transitioning into civilian careers
- Scholarship and grant opportunities — ask our team about current availability
The ROI Conversation
Consider this: a massage therapist in Northern Virginia working a modest client load in an employed position can expect to earn $45,000–$65,000 annually. A therapist with a private practice and a developed clientele in a high-income market like McLean, Great Falls, or Vienna can earn significantly more.
Your 500-hour program at AVI is the upfront cost. The career is the return. Talk to our admissions team about how to make the numbers work for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Real Questions. Straight Answers.
Q: Do I need any prior experience or education to enroll in the massage therapy program?
A: No prior massage experience is required. AVI’s program is designed to take you from beginner to licensed professional. You should have a high school diploma or GED, and a genuine commitment to completing the program — that’s what matters most. If you have specific questions about your background, contact our admissions team and we’ll give you a direct answer.
Q: How long does the program take, and are there day and evening options?
A: We understand that most of our students have lives outside of school — jobs, families, and obligations that don’t pause for training. We offer scheduling options designed for real people. Contact us directly at (703) 943-9841 or through our program inquiry form for current schedule availability — day and evening cohorts vary, and our admissions team can walk you through what’s currently enrolling and what fits your situation.
Q: What is the Virginia licensing exam, and how does AVI prepare me for it?
A: To practice massage therapy legally in Virginia, you must pass the MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination) and apply for licensure through the Virginia Board of Nursing. AVI’s curriculum is built around MBLEx content areas — including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, ethics, and massage techniques — and includes dedicated board examination preparation before you graduate. Our goal is to send every student into that exam having already covered every content domain, not just hoping the material sticks.
Q: I’ve heard about online massage therapy programs. Can I do part of my training online and save money?
A: This is one of the most important questions you can ask — and we want to answer it clearly. Virginia law requires all 500 clock hours of massage therapy training to be completed in person at a SCHEV-certified institution. Online programs cannot fulfill this requirement. Students who complete online or hybrid programs and then attempt to apply for Virginia licensure will find they do not meet the state’s clock hour requirements and cannot sit for the exam.
AVI is SCHEV-certified. Every hour you complete with us counts toward Virginia licensure. If a program cannot show you SCHEV certification, ask why — before you pay a single dollar.
Q: What kind of career support does AVI offer after graduation?
A: AVI doesn’t consider your education complete when you walk across the stage. We provide career guidance, help you understand the Northern Virginia job market, and use our relationships with local spas, clinics, and wellness centers to support your transition into employment. We’ll also help you understand how to pursue private practice if that’s your goal. You will not graduate and be left to figure it out alone — that’s not how we operate.
Q: Is AVI a good choice if I’m a veteran or transitioning service member?
A: Yes. AVI Career Training accepts GI Bill® benefits, and we have deep respect for the service members and veterans who choose to train with us. A massage therapy career is an excellent fit for many military backgrounds — it rewards discipline, physical training experience, and a genuine desire to help others. Contact our admissions team to discuss your specific GI Bill® eligibility and how it applies to the program.
Q: I’m worried about the physical demands. Can I do this if I’m not in peak physical condition?
A: This is a fair concern, and you deserve an honest answer. Massage therapy is physically demanding — your hands, wrists, forearms, and back do real work across a full session. That said, proper body mechanics are a core part of AVI’s training, specifically because we want every graduate to have a long, sustainable career. We teach you how to work with your body, not against it. Many therapists work successfully for decades. If you have a specific physical concern or health condition, reach out and talk to our admissions team — we’ll have a real conversation about it.
