Why Choose AVI Career Training for Cosmetology?
There are cosmetology schools in Northern Virginia. Then there’s AVI. Here’s what makes the difference — and why it matters for your career.
1. COE Accreditation + SCHEV Certification: Credentials That Open Doors
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t just plaques on the wall.
COE accreditation means:
– You may be eligible for federal financial aid, including Pell Grants
– Your program meets nationally recognized standards for quality and outcomes
– Employers and licensing boards recognize your credential as legitimate
– You’re attending a school held accountable for how well it prepares you
When you’re investing months of your life and real money into training, you deserve to know the institution behind you has been externally verified. At AVI, it has.
2. Inclusive Curriculum — Trained to Work on Every Client
This is where AVI is genuinely different, and it matters more than you might realize.
AVI’s cosmetology curriculum explicitly trains you to work beautifully on all skin tones, hair textures, and hair types — from fine straight hair to tight coils, from porcelain to deep melanin-rich skin.
Why does this matter?
Because Northern Virginia is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse regions in the entire United States. Your future clients will reflect that. Hairdressers and cosmetologists who can only confidently serve one demographic leave money on the table and doors closed. Professionals trained on the full spectrum of human beauty are more employable, more referable, and more valuable in every market they enter.
Many beauty schools still default to a narrow range of training models. AVI doesn’t. When you graduate, you graduate ready for the real Northern Virginia client.
3. Hands-On Training from Day One — Not Just Textbooks
You don’t become a skilled cosmetologist by reading about it. You become one by doing it — repeatedly, with feedback, with real people, under professional supervision.
At AVI, hands-on training is built into the program from the start. You’ll work in our salon-floor environment on real clients under the guidance of experienced, licensed instructors. You’ll practice techniques until they’re second nature. You’ll make mistakes in a safe environment and learn from them — which is exactly how real skill is built.
Small class sizes mean you’re not just a seat number. Your instructors know your name, your progress, and where you need support.
4. State Board Prep is Built Into Everything We Do
Passing the Virginia State Board examination isn’t an afterthought at AVI — it’s a thread woven through every hour of your training. Our instructors understand the Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology’s requirements inside and out, and they prepare you for both the written (theory) and practical (skills) portions of the licensing exam throughout your program.
You won’t walk into your board exam feeling unprepared. You’ll walk in having already done most of this dozens of times.
5. A Community That Looks Like You — and Lifts You Up
AVI students come from all over Northern Virginia and all walks of life. You’ll train alongside people who are brand new to beauty and people who have been doing hair informally for years and are finally making it official. Career changers in their 40s. Recent grads in their 20s. Military spouses building portable careers. Parents returning to the workforce.
What they share is this: they chose AVI because it felt like a place where they actually belonged — not a factory, not a franchise, not somewhere designed to process students through as fast as possible.
The beauty industry rewards relationships. So does AVI.

Career Outcomes — What Your Virginia Cosmetology License Makes Possible
Let’s address something directly: cosmetology is a real career. It is a licensed profession, a recession-resistant industry, and one of the few fields where a credential earned in months — not years — opens the door to meaningful, sustained income and genuine career growth.
The question isn’t whether a cosmetology career is viable. The question is how far you want to take it.
What Cosmetologists Earn in Virginia
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for hairdressers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists in Virginia is competitive with many two-year degree fields — and top earners, especially those who build a loyal clientele or own their own salon, earn significantly more.
Important context: cosmetologists’ earnings are not capped by an employer’s pay grade. They are driven by your skill, your clientele, your reputation, and your hustle. Many licensed cosmetologists in the Northern Virginia market — where average household incomes and willingness to pay for quality services are among the highest in the nation — build income streams that surprise people who underestimated the industry.
And unlike many careers, your license is fully portable. It goes with you if you move. It’s yours, not your employer’s.
Career Paths Available to a Licensed Virginia Cosmetologist
One of the most common misconceptions about cosmetology is that it leads to exactly one outcome: working at a salon. Here’s what a Virginia cosmetology license actually makes possible:
| Career Path | What It Looks Like |
|---|---|
| Salon Stylist | Build a loyal book of clients at a salon; grow your income as your reputation grows |
| Salon Owner / Suite Renter | Eventually open your own space or rent a suite — work for yourself, on your terms |
| Freelance & Bridal Stylist | Premium-priced event, bridal, and on-location styling work |
| Editorial & Session Stylist | Work on photo shoots, fashion shows, and advertising campaigns |
| Film, TV & Theater | Hair and makeup for productions in the DC/Maryland/Virginia market |
| Platform Artist & Educator | Represent product brands at trade shows; teach other stylists |
| Beauty School Instructor | With additional credentials, teach the next generation |
| Product Brand Representative | Work for professional beauty product companies in sales or education |
The DC metro market — including the Northern Virginia corridor — is home to a large events industry, an active fashion and media scene, a government and professional services workforce that invests in appearance, and millions of residents who get their hair done regularly. Demand for skilled cosmetologists is not a question here.
The Northern Virginia Advantage
You’re not training in a small market. Northern Virginia sits at the intersection of one of the wealthiest, most diverse, and most densely populated metro areas in the country. That means:
- Consistent year-round demand for salon services
- Clients who pay for quality — the market rewards skill and professionalism
- A diverse clientele that values professionals trained to work on all hair types (see: AVI’s inclusive curriculum)
- A growing population that keeps new potential clients entering the market
- Proximity to DC’s events and media industry for stylists who want to go beyond the salon floor
Your Virginia cosmetology license is a strong credential. Your AVI training makes you ready to use it.
Your Path from Enrollment to Licensed Cosmetologist
Here’s exactly how this works. No mystery, no overwhelming complexity — just a clear path.
Step 1: Explore — Learn Everything Before You Commit
Start here → Request Program Information
Fill out our simple inquiry form and an AVI admissions advisor will reach out to walk you through:
– Program details and scheduling options
– Tuition, financial aid eligibility, and GI Bill® benefits
– What to expect in your first weeks
– Any questions you have — there are no bad ones
You can also call or text us directly at (703) 943-9841. We’re real people who want to help you figure out if this is the right move — not pressure you into a decision you’re not ready for.
Step 2: Apply — A Simple, Straightforward Process
Apply online here → Start Your Application
Virginia’s requirements to enroll in a cosmetology program are accessible:
– Be at least 16 years old
– Have a high school diploma or GED (or be working toward one — talk to us)
– Complete AVI’s enrollment application
That’s it. You don’t need prior beauty experience. You don’t need a portfolio. You just need to want it enough to show up and do the work.
Step 3: Enroll & Begin Your Financial Aid Process
Once accepted, your admissions advisor will help you navigate:
– Federal financial aid (FAFSA) — Pell Grants and other aid for qualifying students
– GI Bill® benefits — AVI accepts the GI Bill® for eligible veterans and military-connected students
– Payment plan options — discuss what works for your situation
– Enrollment paperwork and orientation — we walk you through everything
You will know what your costs look like before you start. There are no surprises.
Step 4: Complete Your 1,500 Hours — With Support Every Step
This is the work. It’s real, it’s hands-on, and yes — it takes commitment.
But here’s what students tell us again and again: it goes faster than they expected. Because when you’re learning something you actually care about, showing up doesn’t feel like a burden. It feels like progress.
Most AVI cosmetology students complete their 1,500 hours in approximately 12 to 14 months. That’s less than a year and a half. Compare that to the four years — and the tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt — of a traditional bachelor’s degree. You’ll have a professional license while your friends who chose the traditional route are still in their sophomore year.
Throughout your hours, you’ll have:
– Consistent instructor feedback and support
– Progress check-ins so you always know where you stand
– A community of fellow students going through it alongside you
Step 5: Pass Your Virginia State Board Exam & Get Licensed
After completing your 1,500 hours, you’ll apply to take the Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology licensing examination — both the written (theory) and practical (skills) components.
AVI’s entire program is built to prepare you for this moment. You will have reviewed the material. You will have practiced the skills. You will have done mock exams. This will not be your first rodeo.
Once you pass — and you will be prepared to pass — you will hold a Virginia Cosmetology License. That credential is yours. It doesn’t expire as long as you renew it. It opens every door this field has to offer.
Step 6: Launch Your Career
With your license in hand, AVI’s admissions and instructor team can help connect you with opportunities in the Northern Virginia salon community. Your career begins — on your terms.
Tuition & Financial Aid
We’re not going to pretend cost isn’t a real consideration. For most of our students, it is. That’s exactly why AVI has built multiple pathways to make this program financially accessible.
Financial Aid — You May Qualify for More Help Than You Think
AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE), which means our students may be eligible for federal financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) — including Pell Grants, which do not need to be repaid.
Many students are surprised to find that they qualify for aid that covers a meaningful portion — sometimes the majority — of their tuition costs. You won’t know until you apply.
Don’t let an assumption about cost stop you from exploring this.
GI Bill® — For Veterans and Military-Connected Students
AVI Career Training accepts the GI Bill® for qualifying veterans, active-duty service members, and military spouses. If you’ve served, your education benefit may cover your cosmetology training.
Northern Virginia has one of the largest military-connected populations in the country. If this applies to you, speak with an admissions advisor first — this could change everything about how you think about affordability.
Payment Options
We work with students to find a financial path that makes enrollment possible. Speak with an AVI admissions advisor about:
– Federal financial aid options after submitting your FAFSA
– Available payment plan structures
– GI Bill® and military benefit processing
– Any additional resources that may apply to your situation

Discussing your financial options costs nothing and commits you to nothing. It just gives you real information so you can make a real decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Real questions. Real answers. No runaround.
❓ Do I need any prior experience to enroll in the cosmetology program?
No. AVI’s cosmetology program is designed for students who are starting from scratch. You do not need any prior professional beauty training, a portfolio, or demonstrated skill. All you need is a high school diploma or GED (or to be actively working toward one — talk to us about your situation), to be at least 16 years old, and the commitment to show up and do the work. Your instructors will meet you where you are.
❓ How long will it take me to finish the program? Is there any schedule flexibility?
Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours to qualify for the cosmetology licensing examination. Most AVI students who attend consistently complete the program in approximately 12 to 14 months.
We understand that our students have real lives — jobs, families, responsibilities. Contact an admissions advisor to discuss current scheduling options and what might work for your situation. We’d rather have an honest conversation about fit than have you enroll in a schedule that doesn’t work for you.
❓ Can I take cosmetology school online in Virginia?
This is one of the most common questions we receive — and an important one to answer clearly.
No. Virginia does not permit cosmetology clock hours to be completed fully online. The Virginia Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires in-person, hands-on training to qualify for the licensing examination. Programs you see advertised online that claim to prepare you for a Virginia cosmetology license without in-person hours are misleading you.
AVI’s program is fully in-person and state-compliant. Every hour you complete with us counts toward your Virginia licensure requirements. There are no shortcuts, and we wouldn’t want there to be — because your skill depends on actual practice.
❓ What happens after I graduate? Do you help with job placement?
After completing your 1,500 hours and passing your state board exam, you’ll hold a Virginia Cosmetology License — and that is your most powerful job-search tool. AVI’s instructors and staff are embedded in the Northern Virginia beauty community and can help connect you with opportunities as you begin your job search.
We also encourage students to begin networking during their training — on the clinic floor, through their instructor relationships, and through industry events. Many graduates have job offers or strong leads before they even sit for their board exam. Your reputation in this industry begins the moment you start training, not after you finish.
