Why Choose AVI for Your Cosmetology Education?

There are other schools in the DC metro area. Here’s why students from Fairfax, Arlington, Reston, Herndon, McLean, Falls Church, and across Northern Virginia choose AVI — and why it matters for your career.

1. COE Accreditation and SCHEV Certification — The Credentials That Actually Count

Not all beauty schools are created equal. AVI Career Training is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education (COE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These aren’t cosmetic distinctions.

COE accreditation means AVI meets nationally recognized standards for curriculum quality, instructor qualifications, and student outcomes. SCHEV certification means the Commonwealth of Virginia has formally recognized AVI as a legitimate postsecondary institution.

Why this matters to you:
– Your diploma is issued by an institution Virginia recognizes — no surprises at the licensing board
– COE accreditation is the gateway to federal financial aid eligibility (FAFSA) — unaccredited schools cannot offer this
– Employers know the difference between a graduate from an accredited program and one from a shop that offers “training”

When you invest 1,500 hours and real money into your education, you deserve a credential that holds up. AVI’s does.

2. Hands-On Training That Prepares You for Real Clients — Fast

Cosmetology is a craft. You don’t learn it from a PowerPoint presentation. AVI’s training model is built around practical, hands-on experience from early in the program — including work in our student training salon where you serve real clients under licensed instructor supervision.

By the time you sit for your Virginia State Board exams, you won’t just have theory memorized. You’ll have genuine muscle memory, professional habits, and a portfolio of real work behind you.

Hours at AVI feel productive — not like a clock you’re watching tick down.

3. Inclusive Training Across Every Hair Texture and Skin Tone

Northern Virginia is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse regions in the country. Your future clients will reflect that — and your training should too.

AVI’s curriculum deliberately encompasses techniques for all hair types, textures, and skin tones: from fine straight hair to tight coils, from ombre balayage on light hair to color work on deep complexions, from European cutting methods to techniques designed specifically for textured hair. You’ll graduate prepared to work on anyone who sits in your chair — not just a narrow slice of the population.

This is a genuine market advantage. Stylists who can confidently serve a diverse clientele are in higher demand in NoVA than virtually anywhere else in the country.

4. Small Class Environment = More Instructor Time for You

Large brand-name academies run high student-to-instructor ratios. When 30 students share one educator, you get a demonstration and a hope that you figure out the rest.

AVI’s small class structure ensures you get direct, personalized attention from licensed, experienced instructors. When your technique is off, your instructor notices and corrects it — before it becomes a habit. When you’re ready to push into advanced skills, your instructor can accelerate with you.

Cosmetology is learned by doing, and doing with supervision is how you get better, faster.

5. GI Bill® Accepted — Proudly Serving Northern Virginia’s Military Community

Northern Virginia is home to one of the largest concentrations of active-duty military, veterans, and military spouses in the nation. AVI is proud to accept the GI Bill®, making our cosmetology program accessible to those who’ve served.

If you’re a veteran or military spouse looking for a faster, skills-based career path that offers independence and flexibility — cosmetology at an accredited school may be exactly what you’re looking for. Talk to our team about how your benefits apply.

Virginia State Board Requirements

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours of cosmetology education before a candidate may sit for the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology examination. This requirement is set by the state — not by AVI. Every hour in our program is designed to meet and exceed what the Board expects to see when you walk in on exam day.

Upon program completion, graduates are eligible to sit for:
Virginia State Board Written Exam (theory and science)
Virginia State Board Practical Exam (hands-on skills assessment)

Passing both exams and meeting all requirements earns you your Virginia Cosmetology License — the credential you need to legally practice and get paid for your work.

Career Outcomes: What Happens After You Graduate?

The Job Market Reality for Cosmetologists in Northern Virginia

The Northern Virginia and DC metro labor market is strong for beauty professionals — and that’s not marketing language. Consider the reality:

People always need haircuts. Recessions slow some industries to a halt. The beauty industry bends but doesn’t break — because looking and feeling presentable is a baseline human need that does not disappear in a downturn. Cosmetology is a genuinely recession-resistant career.

The NoVA market is premium. Northern Virginia’s high household incomes, dense professional population, and cultural emphasis on personal presentation mean clients here expect — and pay for — quality services. A cosmetologist serving clients in Tysons, McLean, or Reston operates in a higher-revenue market than much of the country.

The local market is underserved in diversity-competent stylists. As noted above, AVI’s inclusive training gives graduates a competitive edge in a region that genuinely needs stylists who can work across hair textures and skin tones.

What Can You Earn?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Virginia-specific labor data, cosmetologists in the DC metro area and Northern Virginia typically earn in a range that reflects both the local cost of living premium and the area’s affluent client base. Income potential increases significantly with:

  • Building a loyal client book
  • Adding specialty services (color, extensions, keratin treatments)
  • Booth rental or suite ownership
  • Eventually opening your own salon

Career paths available to licensed cosmetologists include:

Role Setting
Staff Stylist Full-service salon, hotel salon, resort
Salon Manager / Lead Stylist Established salons
Booth Renter / Independent Contractor Salon suites (a major and growing market in NoVA)
Bridal & Special Events Stylist Freelance / event bookings
Platform Artist / Educator Brand-sponsored demonstrations and teaching
Salon Owner Your own business — the ultimate flexibility goal
Film, TV & Editorial Stylist Media production, photography

The Flexibility No Desk Job Offers

Many AVI cosmetology students come to us with one underlying goal: they want their time back. They want to set their own schedule, work the hours that fit their life, pick up their kids, travel when they want, or build something that belongs to them.

Licensed cosmetology is one of the few skilled careers that genuinely delivers this. As a booth renter, suite owner, or freelancer, you are the business. You set the book. You set the prices. You build the brand.

That freedom doesn’t come from passion alone — it comes from a real license, real skills, and real training. That’s what AVI gives you.

Step 2: Review Admissions Requirements

To enroll in AVI’s Cosmetology program, you’ll need:
– A high school diploma or GED equivalent
– To be at least 16 years of age (Virginia requirement)
– Completion of your enrollment application and paperwork

That’s it. You don’t need prior salon experience. You don’t need to already know how to cut hair. You need the drive to learn — AVI provides everything else.

Step 3: Explore Financial Aid Options

AVI’s COE accreditation makes you eligible for federal financial aid through FAFSA. Our team will walk you through the financial aid process, help you understand your options, and make sure you know about every resource available to you — including GI Bill® benefits if applicable. Most students qualify for some form of assistance.

Never let cost be the reason you don’t explore this. Talk to us first.

Step 4: Begin Your Program

Once enrolled, you’ll start building skills from day one. Early in the program you’ll be working on mannequins and practicing techniques; as you advance, you’ll move into the student training salon working with real clients — supervised by licensed instructors every step of the way.

Step 5: Complete Your Hours, Pass Your Boards, Get Licensed

After completing all 1,500 required hours and meeting program requirements, you’ll be prepared and eligible to sit for the Virginia State Board exams. AVI’s State Board prep ensures you walk in ready. Pass your written and practical exams, complete the licensing application, and you’re a licensed Virginia cosmetologist — ready to work.

From enrollment to licensed career in approximately 12–14 months for full-time students.

Tuition & Financial Aid

AVI Career Training believes that cost should never be an automatic barrier to a career that can support you for life. That’s why we’re committed to transparency about cost and proactive about helping students find financial pathways that work.

Financial Aid Is Available

Because AVI is COE accredited, students may be eligible for federal financial aid through FAFSA — the same federal student aid system used by colleges and universities. Many AVI students qualify for grants and other forms of assistance that significantly reduce out-of-pocket costs.

Unaccredited schools cannot offer this. When you see a beauty school advertising unusually low tuition, ask whether they’re accredited, and ask whether you can use FAFSA. The answer is often no — which means no grants, no subsidized options, and no federal protections. The “cheaper” school can quickly become the more expensive mistake.

GI Bill® Benefits Accepted

If you are a veteran, active-duty service member, or military spouse eligible for GI Bill® benefits, AVI accepts this benefit toward your cosmetology program. Contact our admissions team to discuss how your specific benefit applies.

Next Step on Cost: Talk to Us

We don’t publish a single flat tuition figure here because your actual financial picture — aid eligibility, payment plans, benefit programs — is individual. What we’ll tell you clearly: our admissions and financial aid team will give you a complete, honest picture of costs and options before you make any commitment.

Contact us and ask specifically about:
– Current program tuition
– FAFSA eligibility and how to apply
– Payment plan options
– GI Bill® and VA benefit application

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any experience or prior training to enroll in the Cosmetology program?

No. AVI’s Cosmetology program is designed for students entering with no professional background. If you have a high school diploma or GED and you’re at least 16 years old, you meet the basic admissions requirements. Your enthusiasm and commitment matter far more than prior experience. Many of our most successful graduates came in knowing nothing about professional cosmetology — and left as fully licensed, working professionals.

How long will it actually take me to complete the program?

Virginia requires 1,500 clock hours to qualify for the State Board licensing exams. Full-time students typically complete this requirement in approximately 12 to 14 months. Part-time schedules may be available and will extend the timeline accordingly. Our admissions team can help you map out a schedule that fits your current life — whether you’re working, parenting, or managing other commitments. The point is: this is a career you can have in about a year, not four.

Is AVI’s cosmetology program recognized for the Virginia State Board licensing exam?

Yes — fully. AVI Career Training is SCHEV certified (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia), which is the certification required for Virginia state recognition of a cosmetology program. Our graduates are eligible to sit for the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology written and practical examinations upon completing the 1,500-hour program. Your license from an AVI-completed program is valid, recognized, and fully credible.

What kind of job placement support does AVI provide after graduation?

AVI’s relationships with local salons and industry professionals in the Northern Virginia and DC metro market are a genuine resource for graduating students. While we cannot guarantee employment (no school ethically should), we actively support graduates in connecting with employment opportunities, building their professional presence, and navigating the transition from student to working cosmetologist. Additionally, because AVI trains students across all hair textures and skin tones, our graduates enter the market with a skill set that is immediately and genuinely in demand in the diverse NoVA marketplace.

Can I use financial aid or the GI Bill® to pay for this program?

Yes to both. AVI’s COE accreditation makes students eligible for federal financial aid through FAFSA, including grants. This is a significant advantage over non-accredited schools, which are not eligible to offer federal aid. AVI also accepts GI Bill® benefits for qualifying veterans and military-connected students. We strongly encourage every prospective student to speak with our admissions team about financial aid before making any assumptions about affordability — many students are surprised by how much assistance they qualify for.
