Step 1 — Complete Your Required Training Hours

For cosmetology licensure, Virginia requires 1,200 hours of accredited training. AVI’s Cosmetology program meets this requirement fully. Every hour you complete at AVI counts toward your Virginia State Board application.

Other programs have different hour requirements. Nail Technician requires 150 hours; Basic Esthetics requires 600 hours. Your AVI enrollment advisor will walk you through the specific requirements for whichever program you choose.

Step 2 — Pass the Virginia State Board Exams

The Virginia State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology, overseen by the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), requires two exams:
